I haven't played EUIV since they added forts, it really slowed the game down. Assuming the new DLC doesn't break the save converter I might convert my current CK2 game (which I need to get back to), but otherwise I'll probably put off buying/playing it, in favour of playing Elder Kings or a different game entirely

Yeah, I mean, unless you are interested in the EUIV DLC's focus, it's not really a 'must buy'. It only fleshes out a few Asian countries (mostly Ming and Japan), so if you don't play as those kingdoms, there really isn't much point. If you do though ... oh boy ... it looks like they are finally fleshing out some non-Euro countries.

Like I said above, Mandate of Heaven is probably more of a "like it or hate it". The Stellaris DLC looks like it will really flesh out the game though.

Not me; I'm a day one adopter when it comes to Paradox. Other games I tend to wait, but Paradox games are my absolute favorite.

Macro diplomacy? Totally missed that one.

Anyway, I've played through Japan once before and it was a whole lot of fun. I always avoided Ming though, as it was so poorly fleshed out that it always felt like a mod with decent production values. In fact, that is how most of Asia felt, so this DLC is a welcome change for me.

Who are the other Paradox fans around here? @Iron-Tarkus IIRC. You out there?

I don't know how I feel about the EU4 changes. The new features are nice but they also threw in a bunch of questionable balance changes.

Mercenaries got nerfed, religious ideas got nerfed, states got reduced, trade companies got buffed to high hell, colonial nations got buffed. Spain/Portugal are going to be monsters.

Also your provinces prospering is part of the expansion whereas them being devastated is part of the base update.

The Stellaris changes look good but I haven't given that update nearly as much attention.

i'm an old school paradox fan and am not sure i like the model of making major gameplay changes with their DLC they have adopted

i really liked HoI2 and felt that it was perfectly playable without the expansions. Victoria 1 as well.

one thing that i don't like is that they like introducing nerfs in the free patches, but ways to counteract those nerfs in the paid DLC.

like "everyone can Sabotage reputation after reaching the right tech, by using Spy Network" is free patch.
but "counter-espionage" is paid DLC.

and here, "Devastation" is free patch feature
but "Prosperity" is paid DLC

that goes back to CKII when they released retinues and a certain redditor found out how to game them to cause archer volleys to wipe out enemy doomstacks without taking any casualties

each dlc cycle after that was an attempt at nerfing archers while introducing new paid content to make the player stronger/have more options

Yeah, on one hand, it makes the game continually evolve and feel fresh even years after, but on the other hand, it makes people feel like they need to buy all the DLC to play the 'real' game. I think I like it, though, because it means the game gets continuous development for years (Crusader Kings II is five years old, and still recieves a few major patches a year).

And on top of that, I mean, it's a five year old game. I know, as a consumer, we want a lot of bang for our buck, but the company still needs to make money if we want them to keep supporting the game, we have to keep sending them money. I sort of get why they incentivize us, especially since it's a bit of a niche market and they aren't a massive studio. As well, they do actually listen to fans and respond to their comments/concerns.

if you're HRE emperor: normally, when you add a province to the empire, you'd get 1 IA point. but one exploit was that if you go right as it ticks to a new month, while holding C, and then spam the "Add province" button, you'd get a whole lot more IA points.
i recently used this to Revoke Privilegia around 1450-1460 as France.
this is being removed.

another was that, say you have 1 free Diplomat, but you want to Improve Relations with 10 nations: just open up the Diplomatic screen of Nation 1, click "Improve Relations", but don't confirm it yet, then bring up the Diplomatic screen for nation 2, click "Improve Relations", but don't accept it yet, etc etc.
then just hold C for a sec, and suddenly you Improve Relations with all 10 nations, while only using 1 Diplomat.
i recently used this in the same campaign as the last one to keep Improved Relations at maximum with the entirety of Europe through the whole game.
this is being removed

I've heard about that one, and it's made me not want to play until they remove it or else I'll feel forced to use it if I want to play optimally :\ glad it's gone.

Armies have always been expensive to maintain. That is why smaller nations tend to rely on trade for extra income or allying with nearby powers for security. That's not really anything new. The army cap on smaller nations early on basically made it impossible to form any decent size army anyway.

I spent the weekend playing some multiplayer Stellaris with some friends and the update is fantastic.I managed to make a race of super friendly Mushroom people and essentially became ~1800's America with all the immigration I was getting. I had fox people, bird people, sloth people, weird worm people, and even people people

Then I turned bestowed upon them immortal robot bodies
