most of them have self-esteem issues and i find it hard to watch someone who prefers to be known as a cartoon character drawn on the video screen or just a voice

just makes me far too curious into the reasoning for why they want to be so mysterious about themselves

I'm not a Youtuber, but if I was, I wouldn't show my face. Has nothing to do with self-confidence - I routinely address crowds of hundreds as part of my job - and everything to do with the fact I don't want my face to be well-known, simply because I value my privacy and anonymity.

Being famous sounds awful to me.

People have a tendency to harass the shit out of people on the Internet who say things they don't agree with and I'm not just talking about saying mean things. There have been controversial youtubers who lost their jobs because people called their employer in droves demanding they be fired. Of course they're obscuring their identity.

It's because we live in a day and age where if you say something that's somewhat controversial it can have serious negative effects on you. Like losing your job or having your friends and family harassed or being doxxed. Some people even get swatted because they hurt someone's feelings online.

I always think it must suck to be a famous Youtuber and not be able to walk around a convention or any other "nerdy" gathering place without wearing a mask. No shame in that.

I once saw a video of a bunch of SJWs attacking a group of anti-SJW YouTubers, and one of the SJWs was all, "Why do so many of you guys feel the need to hide your face behind these stupid cartoon characters?" This while there were multiple people on the SJW side that were doing the same fucking thing.

Back before my computer broke, and I was making YouTube videos, I never put my face in them. Several reasons, first of all I wouldn't want to because it's embarrassing, secondly because it's just videos of me and cousin being dumb and goofing off with each other, and lastly because I don't know how lol.

If I was a Youtuber I'd wear a hood that covered my eyes. Think Skyrim Thieves Guild hood. It'd be a bit mysterious. You'd only know my nose, mouth and chin beard.

I think it's fine. it forces/allows viewers to focus on the discussion/topic at hand instead of unintentionally/intentionally judging and being distracted by the appearance of the YouTuber.
