He'll then have a moment where he stares into the distance; I figure he is weighing his desire to get away against his innate laziness. Even when he gives in and stretches out, I get the feeling he isn't implying he likes it so much as he is saying to me "do what you will to me, just make it quick."

Your cat doesn't give a fuck about you. I don't know why people think their cats love them. They don't. They just enjoy that you give them food and scratch them every now and then. And even with he latter sometimes they're just too lazy to fight back.
