The first had is alone, while the second is actually a part of the phrase "had to" which has its own separate meaning. This is a fundamental difference that essentially makes both "had"s different words that are spelled identically.

It's awkward phrasing, but it's not necessarily wrong. Honestly, something like "Susan was also forced to quit her job" is a lot smoother. The first sentence is also incredibly awful. Oh, plus there's only one "t" in "benefited." #TheMoreYouKnow
