I wasn't there for him like I wish I could have been. His mother and I split up and she got married. I don't make enough money to take care of myself, let alone help out.
I try to go and see him and his siblings, always get birthday and christmas presents.

I'm dreading the day when he looks me in the eye and asks me why. Why I wasn't there, why I couldn't help, why I didn't visit him more even though he only lives a 10 minute drive away.

Brb CE, getting a drink.

So what got in the way? Financial obligations? Other personal issues?

That's sad dude. I'd be lying if I said I didn't share the same fears though. I've been so careful to not get a girl pregnant, because I don't think I'm at all prepared financially or mentally to handle the responsibility of a kid. Then, like you said.. maybe the day comes when they ask you "why?" There's no answer you can give that's good enough.

Time goes by so fast. Although I think even if you can't spare much money, the most important thing you can give is your time. Maybe you can't give them everything they want, but what they're going to remember most is you being there.

Fuck off. I rarely drink, maybe once or twice a month.

A combination of trying to go to university, part time and full time work, and being so stressed out that I've started having panic attacks and insomnia. I have pretty bad bi-polar so I try to stay by myself whenever stress gets high.
Really there is no excuse. I could see him every day I have off. I honestly don't know what's stopping me.

She wanted more kids and a financial stability I couldn't provide. And I truly think we weren't right for each other.

Yea my daughter is nearly a year old but it feels like she was just born a couple months ago. I'm glad I never had your problems though OP. I don't know what I would do if I wasn't able to be in my child's life.

It's never too late for a fresh start. Cheesy but true. If you want to have a better relationship with your son, the only way to make that happen is to try.

Aww - I think I understand. Though as the other poster said, you can change it now! Especially as your son goes into the middle school years, having your presence in his life will count for a lot. Even if you can't afford much, just spending time with him, letting him know there is another adult that cares for him and is watching him counts for SOOOO much.
