Not at all. He was a B superhero just like every other super hero currently in the MCU.

Spider-Man is their golden child, followed by members of the X-Men.

Pre-2008, only nerds knew who they were.

he has always been super important in-universe. but in the real world, he was a minor character, that most people didn't care about.

He's had various cartoons made about him since the 60s, my mom remembers watching marvel heroes (including not just iron man but the cap, the hulk) when she was a kid.

Idk what it means to be part of the a team but kept are definitely overestimating how obscure he was before 2008

The Black Sabbath song isn't about the character, but people thought it was and it contributed to his popularity later in the 70s and onward.

In addition to the cartoon, he was also in several video games where he was a popular/favorite character, namely, The Avengers arcade game, and MvC2.

I knew who Iron Man was but I never really knew what he was about until the movie. The most I knew was that cheesy song in the 90''s and he showed up in the 90's spider-man cartoon opening. I also remember the x-men appearing in that cartoon in one episode as well as a whole bunch of other heroes like the hulk and fantastic four, and the punisher and dare devil appearing in the opening as well. It was kinda confusion when I later learned that guy in the stupid looking mane helping spider man with his whole turning into an actual spider problem was actually a bad guy by the name Kraven the hunter later on.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Marvel_Super_Heroes

this show has a similar number of episodes as lou ferrigno's the incredible hulk!!

nah its pretty clear that spiderman, the hulk, x-men, and the fantastic four were the old "a team"

but acting like people hadn't heard of iron man or captain america is also disingenuous I think

there's definitely a sliding scale, more people know about captain america than iron fist you know

Hulk actually had a television series, the Captain America stuff was actually made-for-tv movies and so that's why there is less talk about them as they were on air significantly less. They were pretty popular when they were released, however.

Cap never had a proper live-action TV show. I'd argue Hulk didn't either as Hulk TV show wasn't anything like the comics but that was mostly due to budget and technology limitations.

The measure of a superhero is the exposure they get OUTSIDE of the comics. In that regard, he was a character that was known, but not really focused on or favorited by many. He had a UPN cartoon and some video game appearances. In the grand scheme of things, I'd say he was a B- superhero before Robert Downey Jr. took over the role.

Because Marvel wasn't making their own movies at the time. That was Fox, who had the rights to Ghost Rider, Punisher, X-men, and Daredevil, all of which were made into movies.
