Let's say a guy walks into a store and drops his pants. Later on the white person tells the story to a friend. If the guy was white the story goes "So this guy walked into the store today and dropped his pants." If the guy was black the story goes "So this black guy walked into the store today and dropped his pants."

It's weird.

Burgess is trying to point out that TC is a hypocrite when what he's doing isn't the same thing as what TC just described.

Therefore, Burgess might have a morally sound point but what he says doesn't and shouldn't negate what TC is asking

actual answer: Because whites are the majority, people are assumed to be white prior to any other information. Either the behavior will dictate what the listener assumes them to be (the story might indicate, for some reason, that the person is NOT white), or the storyteller will specify as much if they think the detail is important / will affect how the story is understood.

I know white people dont just do it. Just used it as an example.

Because for many in America white is default. So everyone is one is white until someone says other . ( unless it is something like terrorism or drug use) Then for some odd reason it is assumed the person is something else.

Why do people of any race specify this when telling a story? I hear it a lot at work. How does specifying the race of one person in a story contribute to anything? Are we supposed to interpret it differently if a black guy dropped his pants as opposed to an Asian guy?
