Listened to it a total of 7 times now.

Guys I think the double album theory is a bit of a stretch. The album wraps its theme up nicely with little left to desire.

Still a 9/10

Love is definitely the weakest track
I have a lot more love for Lust now though

I'd love the double album theory to be true, but I'm not holding my breath. The whole thing gives me "Mass Effect 3's ending was an elaborate ruse/Shepard was indoctrinated" vibes -- seems to be so perfect it must be true when you squint hard enough, but in reality, not so much.

I'd imagine that generally speaking that his fanbase is largely Christian or at least identifies as such. Probably the same percentage as the national average is for people 18-35 which I'd assume is his primary demographic.

Speaking more personally, I'm an atheist though and CE has a disproportionately high percentage of atheists compared to national averages and such so I'd imagine the majority of CEmen who are also Kendrick fans are probably atheists.
And for what it's worth, despite not being religious myself I can still very much appreciate the religious metaphors throughout TPAB for example.

If true I hope that doesn't effect the quality of Kendrick's albums. If the president of the label is really involved with the artist you can tell they definitely helped with some of the executive decisions of the album. Like look at what happened to Lupe after Chilly got locked up. Obviously there was a ton of factors to why his discography dipped in quality but I do think Chilly being gone was a big reason.

Well that's kinda the point and the joke. Treating it like a surprise second part of the album on Easter would be the equivalent to the resurrection or second coming of Christ.

TBH my favorite part of the album is how he cuts the nonsense. No major musical features, no extended skits or interludes. just banging ass beats and the bars to match. no stupid voices either, just ordinary Kenny.

the only downside of this is that there's no particularly standout track for me, but there are no weaknesses either

Initial listen-through thoughts:

TPAB >> GKMC > DAMN >>> S80

Please note I'm unapologetically super white and K.Dot is Babby's First Rapper for me, so that does impact things. I'm a classical musician by profession, so the jazzier, more intricately arranged (instrumentally, at least) Butterfly is still his magnum opus for me. That said, I'm really excited to dig deep with Genius.com and do a hard listen; and again, and again.

Ah gotcha, probably true.

But yeah, I'm enjoying Damn as is and it might grow on me even more, but I think only "Fear" truly had me reeling. I love a few of the others too, but there's loving a song and there's being completely floored like I was by Blacker the Berry or mesmerized like I was by U.

I'm also not currently thinking he's matched GKMC in terms of pure jams either. The only Money Trees/Swimming Pools/Backseat Freestyle tier singalong is Humble imo, at least so far. Maybe Element.

Sounds like I'm bashing it when I'm really enjoying the album, I've just got TPAB as one of my favorite albums period, ever, any genre, and GKMC is phenomenal as well. Damn is "really good" in comparison... so far. Requires more than one listen to know, that's for sure.

Like, I thought Humble was just decent at first and know I can't stop playing it, so who knows which songs I'll be in love with by a second or third listen?

When you're listening to Kendrick Lamar, just remember that he's not like other rappers. His music is incredibly artistic, almost to the point where you have to be paying complete attention to him to even remotely understand him. I remember listening to a song on To Pimp A Butterfly (though I can't remember what it was), where I thought a song was absolute bollocks during the listen. Then, I closed my eyes for a second, and all of a sudden the song had an entirely new meaning. It was insane the way Kendrick Lamar could just become something so different when you take a look into the music.

Another thing you should note about Kendrick Lamar is that it's easy to get a headache listening to him. Not because he's a bad rapper, but because of how many ideas his music is riddled with and how complex he is. Soon enough your head will fill to the brim and the rest will just sound like noise to you. Just turn it off and give it a listen the next day.

If you don't like the music, you'll definitely at least enjoy reading through the lyrics, and picking apart the song itself and all of the artistic values that go into making it the complexity that it is.

I believe there's a second album coming out today but I think it'll be called "god" and the titles to all the songs will be lowercase. Notice how all the songs on DAMN. are all CAPS with a punctuation. I believe the second album track list will coincide with DAMN. and fit together.
noFEAR. or kendrickDUCKWORTH. for example.

Notice the sample on the first part of DUCKWORTH. looping God over and over again.

The outro to FEAR. with the whole goddamn u me us all
The part in ELEMENT. where he raps "Going digital and physical on all y'all" as well as the "goddamn" rhyme scheme in during the middle of the track.


Basically I think this is a double album and DAMN. is the second disk.
