Poll of the Day > Seriously, why do we still use Latin for anything at all? It's making me rage.

I miss the first couple of decades of my life where Latin never came up, ever.
Now I'm at university and every fucking week during my reading it's all 'a priori' this, and 'amicus curiae' that. 'caveat emptor', 'contra proferentem', 'habeas corpus', 'ignorantia juris non excusat', 'in flagrante delicto' and then just for good measure 'vigilantibus non dormientibus aequitas subvenit'.

Fuck. This. Shit.

Now I understand I don't have to learn these terms but it's so fucking annoying having to hit up google every time I open a textbook or journal article just because we have to be too fucking pompous to just use English terms.

Tempted to just write an entire essay in Latin and be like 'now wot bitch?'

there are tons of words in the English language that have Latin roots. You should try to stop using any of the words and see how far you get.

Latin is used to filter out the filthy peasants who think that affording college makes them part of a rich enough family to deserve education.

I once found an amazing site for learning latin. In less than a week I was more comfortable speaking latin than a year of spanish with a teacher. It was a lesson plan put together by a latin teacher who claimed to have found the easiest way to teach it and it was almost all tex based. But after that week, I lost the link and never saw it again.

That was about 13 years ago, but there is hope out there

We use it specifically in science because it is a dead language and therefore unbiased and not tied to any existing culture

Fabricati diem, pvnc!

Because Greek and Latin are the historical distinction between the educated and uneducated.

If you are educated, you can understand Monty Python jokes.

Law, Medicine, and sciences make extensive use of Latin.
