Since yesterday:

- A weird advertisement section opens up in the middle of a message thread
- a pop up banner with an advertisement that appears in the center of the screen, right at the bottom of the screen appears
- an ad pops up on the lower-right corner of the screen
- the entire left portion of the screen becomes an ad

This doesn't happen in any other webpage to me, and I just ran a malware check and I'm good.

Yeah that's normal. And don't forget

-Multiple video ads talking over each other
-Redirect to fake antivirus
-Giant background video ads so poorly coded they bring a high end gaming PC to its knees

It's been spiraling out of control for years.

The mobile site is unusable without turning off javascript.

I can't figure out why GameFAQs hasn't at least taken the opportunity to demand their advertisers put a hard limit on how complex their ads are or anything. They're willfully choosing to just ignore a serious problem with their website.

I get that, and definitely want to support a site I use often. However, there are malicious ads and they are very intrusive. They should consider native advertising like Reddit does or even Facebook.

So long as CPM remains a concept, the death-spiral will continue.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cost_per_impression

More people blocking ads means more ads needs to be fed the people who don't, which just drives more people to start blocking ads. Repeat until the 1999 crash happens all over again.

Or, EA/Activision just pays CBS a pile of money, upfront, to advertise DudeBro Shooter Subtitle Number on GameFAQs for a month.

Also why do they let ads be fully functional frames with any sort of coding. Fuck all of that. Limit them to pictures again, plz.

So long as internet advertising is "copy/paste this snippet of javascript into your page", there's no way to actually have any control on what the ads are.

I use an adblock too, but it would be nice to support the site for free without my browser grinding to a halt from the sheer volume of ads.

This may sound like a joke but... they should allow users to pay for stuff. Like "gamefaqs gold" or the like. Maybe you pay a gold membership and that way you get better rated moderators to review your marked messages (both the ones you mark and your marked messages).

Maybe only gold-users can mark messages and follow users (which would solve the whole problem about the "warned general" clique mis-using the follow and marking features on this board, we all know they wouldn't be able to afford CE-gold).

I'd pay for that in a heartbeat

"Just report the bad ads guys!"

Thing is, that's not a fix. How many topics and complaints have to trickle in before something actually changes? Thanks for embedded media. It'd be nice to enjoy it on mobile without my phone locking up. It'd be nice to enable JavaScript again and use this site in 2017.

1. I haven't marked any message you've posted with this account.
2. I have never threatened you with getting your account banned, as I can't perform this action directly or indirectly.
3. I have predicted that this alt of yours will be banned, which it will be, like all of your other accounts do.

I think the question is why are they allowing advertisers the use of javascript instead of just being images.

Which come to think is a terrible idea for so many more reasons anyway

Good luck in convincing the staff that it is their job and their job alone to police the ads on GameFAQs and not the users'.

What exactly is expected of users? You ask on the help boards and they pretend it's just you. Meanwhile if you look around, you can't throw a rock any direction without it breaking a window of a topic complaining about it.

this is not about reporting ads.

They just chose to add NEW ads that disrupt the website. We're talking ads in the middle of the screen. Ads to the sides of the screen. Pop ups in corners of the screen playing sounds. This is not something to report, this is something they did
