Choose your choice

The wolves are hungry and the bear has 30 minutes of prep time

You are armed with a machete and have a single 1d8 health potion

Honestly you've probably got a better shot against the bear. You might be able to get one wolf before the other 4 ravage you. Even if you do manage to drink your health potion before you die, you'll probably get 2, 3 kills tops.

I'd take my chances with the bear. Math doesn't really help much in physical confrontations.

Depends on the situation but in general the bear would be easier to take down then 5 wolves (at once).

If you could find a way to limit the wolves access to you, so you only have to fight one at a time, that would be different.

The bear being smart could be a factor, but your still dealing with most of the same physical limitations. Bears are fast, but they can not turn/dodge quickly, so if you can find cover/trees etc to dodge around you can probably stay out of it's range, and you have the ability to use projectiles, far better then the bear.

Get a few spears in it's legs and slow it down, and you could hopefully survive the initial encounter.

5 wolves are faster and can dodge around things as well as you pretty much, and can attack from 5 directions at once (although hopefully you could at least get something behind your back). If you could make a fire fast enough you might be able to use that to funnel them and only fight a few at a time, and you also might be able to still use ranged weapons (if available), but your chances of survival are going to be far less.

Wolves can also climb rocky slopes etc better, although you could still have an advantage there. That would be a nice way to take either down (find a cliff you can climb and throw rocks down from there at the bear/wolves).

If your just plain in an arena with no cover though, your pretty much screwed either way. I was pretty good with weapons/martial arts in my day, and I wouldn't just tap out against a bear (I might have pulled it off 1 time out of 10 or something), but 5 wolves would have taken a miracle to beat in an arena with no cover.

If you have a machete int he forest, you can make spears. If you have a machete in an Arena, your pretty much screwed.

Only real chance is to get in close to the bear at that point and try and circle around it fast enough to hamstring it, slice it up a bit, and hope it bleeds out. Perhaps you can get the bear to charge you towards a wall in the arena or something and slash it a few times when it hits the wall etc.

Wouldn't wanna go toe to toe with a bear, using only a machete, if I had any other option.

If the wolves don't know math, then they don't know how many 5 is, so I can trick them into only having me fight one.

I was gonna say bear, but I saw the Revenant.

5 hungry wolves... maybe I could catch some food for them and make friends with them. Show them I can hunt and cook food for them.

I'll become fucking Mogli from the Jungle Book!
