IIRC you don't build any guns, you can only build mods. You need to use whichever bench is for the gun upgrades. One table is for armor and the other is for the guns.

download a mod to put in the game what Bethesda should have put there to begin with?

Sorry it's been like a year and a half since I played. What gun part do you have? I think you create, mount, or dismount the gun mods on the gun work bench.

If you don't have the parts in your inventory, then they have to be stored in the workbench system at the settlement you're at for them to register when you're modding - if you're just dumping them in a cabinet somewhere, they won't register. Taking either the first or second Local Leader perk allows settlements to share workbench resources and materials (but you have to set up supply lines between them).
