Some dogs can’t even understand the basic “sit” and “stay” commands, let alone being smart enough to break out of an animal hospital – which is precisely what General did earlier this week.

General is a Great Pyrenees who was kept in a kennel at the Aquia-Garrisonville Animal Hospital in Stafford, Virginia while his family was on vacation. The hospital’s security footage captured on Sunday night shows the pup opening four different doors – one of which he opened with his mouth – in order to escape.

The canine then strolls very nonchalantly across the parking lot and into the darkness.

Officials at the animal hospital called the dog’s owners, informing them of his masterful escape.

While General’s disappearance may have caused quite a fuss, he was later found resting in the family’s next-door neighbor’s yard.

“General has been found!” wrote the hospital in a Facebook post on Monday. “According to neighbors he was resting in their yard since 11 am this morning. A huge thanks to all that helped General find his way back safely. A special thanks to Stafford Animal Control, Stafford Sheriffs, and the many friends of AGAH who supported us through this stressful time. Officer McCall was the responding Animal Control Officer to return him to us.”

I took my dog on a walk once to go to a small river that was a few kilometers from my place. It involved crossing a couple of fairly busy roads. By the time I got there, it was obvious he was out of his comfort zone. I didn't even let him off the leash before he swam across the shower part of the creek, ran up the other side of the embankment, and took off in the direction of home.

I ended up immediately leaving and walking back home, hoping that he would be there when I got home. Sure enough, he was.

My girlfriend has a Shitzu she had a few years before we started dating. We live in a pretty harsh environment--the northern parts of Michigan. It gets pretty snowy and cold here in the winters.

The dog escaped one morning and was last seen deep in the nearby woods--IN JANUARY.

She thought all hope was lost...but a couple mornings after, he came back dirty, bloody and scared...he wasn't the same for a few weeks. But he DID come back, which amazes me. They vet guessed he had a tussle with a Fox or Racoon. He still has a scar under his eye. He is probably the most loving, intelligent small dog i've ever encountered. And tough. Just today he got charged by a massive German Shepard and he held his ground enough for the other dogs owner to break up the tussle.

My friends Cat was picked up by a large owl while it was napping in the yard. The cat returned home three weeks later...gashes from the talons were healed and no other major wounds. People never believe it when he tells this story, but I was there when the cat returned.


Animals are tough.

I wish I could have seen my dog go through those two days...wonder what he did.
