Now this a scene I have examined very closely, perhaps too closely, but it's one of the most bizarre sequences ever set to film.
This follows Peter Parker's and Harry Osborn's conversation about Mary Jane. The romantic plotline of this movie is so byzantine and complicated that I won't summarize, but somebody has amnesia, somebody is going crazy, and there's something about a French waiter played by Bruce Campbell. Peter leaves the diner after Harry gloats over cucking him, leaving Harry in his moment of glory. This is where the waitress comes in to refill his coffee, and asks:
"How's the pie?" And we get the priceless reply "so good". Already I had begun laughing in the theater at this.
This is the response of a man who is truly loving his pie, in fact loving his pie with a greater intensity and passion than most of us will ever feel about anything in our lives. This is the greatest single moment of acting in James Franco's career, he will never top this. It is glorious. And like everything else, this joy makes little sense with the rest of the scene.
We cut to Peter walking outside, and he turns out to see Harry one last time out the window. He does this in the middle of the street, which is fairly dumb. We cut back to Harry, who sees Peter.
James Franco does his best to wink, but fails. He's left in a painfully awkward twitched face, totally ruining his moment of triumph. He might be winking, he might have had a major stroke, I am not entirely sure. And I'm not sure what the wink is supposed to mean anyway.
Suddenly HONK! A truck appears out of nowhere, as if divine punishment for Peter Parker's pedestrian hubris. Peter narrowly avoids the massive mack truck that has spontaneously spawned in a narrow Manhattan street, naturally surprised.
We can see as the truck goes by that Harry mysteriously disappears. Also a fellow diner, as confused as the audience is, turns around to see what happened. Based upon the situation and the location of the characters, there is no way Harry escaped the way he did, it's like a magic trick... for no reason.
One can only assume that Harry is using his supervillain powers to teleport out of the diner and escape the check (a deep insult to the "so good" pie) or maybe Harry belly flopped onto the floor for some reason, causing the man behind him to wonder what this crazy White boy is doing. Either way it doesn't make sense for Harry's previous gloating and failed attempt at winking.
Peter looks back to the camera, then double takes, perplexed beyond words.
