Yeah my manager at work is like 31 and has roommates. He bought his own house and has roommates in there to essentially pay the mortgage even though he could pay it himself. But it's weird to me. Don't you want any privacy? Idk I couldn't do it.

He's probably lonely. Or in a homosexual relationship.

My gay uncles in Texas were just referred to as roommates by the older family members until we were old enough to get that they were gay lovers.

I rented my own apartments from 21-27. I really really like having my own place. But saving like $600 a month now while having an even better apartment than before is worth having one roommate, who's like my best friend and a decent/considerate person. But I really did take advantage of having my own place and loved every day of it.

Weren't you just advertising for a roommate yesterday or the day before?

I lived by myself in Massachusetts for 5 years after living with my girlfriend for 5 years.

After moving to Philly to live and work with a good friend, I lived with him for 3 years. He moved to San Diego and I moved in with another good friend. 2 years later, he also moved to San Diego after breaking up with his boyfriend that had moved in.

His ex and I are on good terms, friends even. Recently one of my fiancee's good friends and employee moved in ahead of me moving to my fiancee's house in September.

Having good roommates that respect your privacy when you want it and that you can chill with at other times is a good thing.

Some of my teammates make150-200k+/year and have roommates. They're just used to rent not being more than X, and living in a big metro like NYC or SF, to avoid going over X while having a convenient commute, they need roommates.

Its not that they can't afford to live alone, it's that they can't accept the idea of paying that much for rent. More power to them.

I had a conversation with a lady about this a few days ago.

She works in New Jersey but wants to live in Philly. The problem is that her preferred neighborhood to live in results in a 1-1.5hr commute. If she moves into the township where her job is , it's a dry township and that's not appealing. She hopes she can find a place in a different Philly neighborhood within walking distance of the train hub that would allow her to walk to the station and work with only a 30 minute commute, but that may require having a roommate to afford it.

I get that people don't like roommates or believe that older people shouldn't have them, but it helps reduce cost and allows for a possible friend. Also, it helps to understand what it means to live with another person for those that desire a permanent, live together relationship.

In the country I live in, it is all but common to have housemates and roommates. The primary reason is that rent here is just too expensive. To live here on your own flat or villa will cost about 1.3k USD monthly (for an average 1 bedroom hall flat)! So people tend to have more than 2-3 roommates and still have housemates.

Also, in this country, the expatriates account to about 80% of the population; their main goal is to save up their salaries and send funds back home to support families or to purchase property.

So, yes, I do understand that it IS weird to have roommates after reaching adulthood. However, what shapes this situation is usually the unavoidable financial struggle that everyone here is going through.

I think there are sacrifices everyone is willing to make. Some people will get rid of their car and/or phone, others will take on a roommate, some relocate entirely. It's all about priorities and what specifically bothers that person more. There can be multiple pragmatic choices to a common problem.

Depending on where one work at and the type of work, affordable housing/rent might not always be feasible. Friend of mine pays $1,700ish a month on rent but can easily afford it. I on the other hand cannot and would have to look elsewhere or get a roommate.

And then there's this. I was roommates with two of my closest high school friends in college. One of them was great and always cleaned up after himself. The other, not so much. Hell, one time he got mad at us thinking we threw away his UPC code for a rebate while we were cleaning up and turns out he misplaced it. Didn't even apologize to us. When he was moving out and left a pile of dirty dishes that he borrowed and never washed.

We're still friends now and I'm gonna be one of his groomsmen for his wedding in July but it was an easy decision to not be roommates with him the following college year.

I love living alone. I lived with roommates for 5 years (4 years of college + first year postgrad when I wasn't making much). Then I got a new job offer and after some calcs, realized I could easily afford a studio while still saving the same amount of money (and occasionally more, depending on commission) that I was saving while living with the roommate.

Plus, it also depends on how you value your living space and your free time. For me, it's hugely important. When you work 9-5, you only get ~6 hours of free time (5PM-11PM). I want that time to be all about me. I don't want to have to hide out when I jerk off or turn the volume down on my TV when the roommate is napping or something. So I don't mind shelling out an extra ~$150/month for a huge quality of life boost.
