At 23 years old he had one the best lives in the world. Then he threw it all away and was going to spend 50+ in a box. Regardless of the outcome of his latest trial I suppose 4 years locked up was all he was willing to do.

Because since he was appealing and there was no chance he'd win he doesn't need to pay the family anything now since during an appeal because of some law in Massachusetts it assumes and gives the benefit of the doubt that you're innocent. It happened with that Enron guy and nobody got money from him it all went to his family. So Hernandez knew this and now his remaining money and estate will go to his fiancee and daughter.
