I didn't realize it was a new video. I thought YouTube was suggesting to me the old James & Mike Mondays video on Sonic '06. I loved how he approached that one with an open mind, thinking that it was just going to be something that paled in comparison to the original, and then got blown away by how shitty it was.

In his early videos he was playing games from his childhood, and exaggerating his real thoughts on them through his character.

I wouldn't say that he's not a big gamer. It's just that he's more of a movie guy.

And he's always exaggerated how bad or how difficult a game is when he's in character. If he found the NES version of Godzilla disappointing, that's his business. But you don't walk into a volcano four times because you can't comprehend that the thing that's hurting you is in the background.

The same goes for Mortal Kombat: Mythologies where he couldn't get past the traps in the first stage. A six year old could probably figure out that you throw a kick to trigger the falling beams, then pass underneath as they're going back up.


In the case of Sonic '06, I haven't played it personally, but it seems pretty wretched. Not from a difficulty standpoint, but from a creative standpoint. I don't play Sonic for the plot. And if I did, I'd want it to be something more like the Archie Comics; not Final Fantasy. Also, Sonic was supposed to have a human love interest when the first game came out, but they shot that idea down back then. There's a reason for that.

1. James is really bad at gaming. There was a recent video where he and Mike were playing Comic Zone and didn't realize Mike was playing a demo screen

2. In a lot of his early videos (not so uch Mythologies) he was trying to simulate how he played as a kid. Which is why he seems "intentionally" bad, he was trying to show what he was like when he first rented the game 20 years before

He admitted in an interview that he allowed himself to be defeated in some of the early games like The Karate Kid and McKids (one which he didn't play when he was younger). He more or less implied that he'd ceased inflating the difficulty, but then he went and allowed himself to be killed a half-dozen times in the Sub-Zero traps.

As for him not being a good gamer, he might not have the best instincts when playing a new game, but he's beaten Ninja Gaiden and Ghosts 'n Goblins. That might be more a matter of perseverance than baseline skill, but he's at least decent. But I think his biggest muck up was not figuring out that you could run by pressing R in the Dennis the Menace video. And that's a mistake that I've made as well. It's wise to test all of the buttons when playing a new game, but you get so used to standard platforming controls that it's easy to assume there isn't a run feature rather than think it might be something like L or R.

That's video gaming in general. You don't blast through games because you have skill. You blast through them because they were easy or because of memorization. Your subconscious is thinking to itself, "I've never made it to this stairwell before, but I know an enemy is going to try and ambush me because enemies have ambushed me in similar spots in earlier levels."

Granted, it is possible to breeze through a game of a similar nature after mastering one type of game. When I beat Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts, it took me two hours to get through the final castle (on the second quest). When I switched over to Genesis and played Ghouls 'n Ghosts, a game that just mauled me during my childhood, I beat it in one sitting and with no greater difficulty than if it had been a Super Mario game.

But those specific controls and that particular style of gameplay were still fresh in my memory. It's not like I could just pick up a platformer I've never played before and cut through it because I've adapted superior gaming reflexes or anything like that.


If beating difficult games doesn't make you a good gamer, I don't know what does. Playing a game until you've mastered it, then pretending like it's your first time playing?
