You’re walking down the sidewalk with your child whom you love very much. You hear some shouting at the backyard of a particular house and get concerned. You’re able to identify it as the screams of a little boy. When the shouting persists, you walk onto the outside gate of the property and see a man beating up a young boy with a rifle. The boy is covered in blood all over from the severe beating.



The man sees you and starts shouting that you better mind your own business and points the rifle at your child. The rifle is loaded. You had to bring your child along because you couldn’t leave them unattended on the sidewalk to possibly get kidnapped.

The man shouts that he’s teaching his boy manners and that if you interfere then your child will be shot at and presumably killed. If you leave, however, then you know the boy will die because he’s lost so much blood. The man tells you to leave or else he will shoot at your child and you.

Nobody else is there. If you leave and call the police at a later time then the boy will surely be dead by then. If you stay and try to stop him then your child will be shot at and possibly die. You do not have any weapon on you and you forgot your cellphone at home.

Question 1: What do you do?

a.) Walk away while trying to rationalize there is no helping the boy anyway. You simply rationalize that you’re a good parent and leave it at that with no concern for the boy.

b.) You risk trying to save the boy and put your child in danger.

Question 2: How moral do you think you are as a person now?
