It was pretty fun back in the day but upon a semi-recent playthrough I forgot how finicky the jumping mechanics are.

The gravity physics is just bad.

The entire game just needs Wonderboy'd, badly.

The Guardian Legend.

Think walking around Zelda parts combined with space shooter sections to fight bosses.

It's very good.

I usually compare it to Blaster Master, except reverse it so that the top-down part is the main exploratory portion of the game and replace the platformer part with a vertical shooter.

8 Eyes gets a bad rap - it's one of the best, if not ONLY, co-op games on the NES

What?!? There are plenty of co-op games. Chip 'N Dale. Bubble Bobble. Snake, Rattle, 'N Roll. Lifeforce. Contra. Mario Bros kinda. This is just off the top of my head.

Marble Madness and Jackal too.

Maybe a more interesting question - are there any splitscreen NES games? I wonder what the first splitscreen game was. The earliest one that I'm familiar with is Sonic 2, but I wouldn't be surprised if there's some more obscure game that did it first.

Dr. Mario, Yoshi, Tetris?

I had thought of those, but I don't think those are true splitscreen like Sonic 2. I mean something where the two players are participating in the same map/level but have separate views.

A very underrated puzzle game is Kickle Cubicle. https://www.gamefaqs.com/nes/563431-kickle-cubicle I really wish Irem was still around.

Came in here to say this. :> I am not needed here.

(it's also worth noting Kickle Cubicle is a port/sequel of an arcade game that's also worth looking into if you're a fan)

Marble Madness is not a co-op game, it's just regular simultaneous multiplayer... that'd be like calling Mario Kart a co-op game.

Ah because both people are competing against each other and not trying to achieve the same goal together.

If that's the case you could almost say the same about Bubble Bobble since you can screw with the other guy and you're trying to get a higher score than Bob.

Oh I know about the pause / bring Bob back to stand there like a dummy while you kill the giant wizard thing haha. It stinks to play this game solo as it's meant to be played with two.

Alright, so I beat Faxanadu. My overall thoughts about the game...

As I said before, the game is very beautiful looking, especially for NES standards. The presentation is also really good with all of the mugshots of characters when you talk to them (even if most of them look depressed, lol), and the cutscenes at the beginning and end of the game were nice as well.

The music was good, and a pleasure to listen to as I went through the game. The gameplay was a lot of fun, and it reminded me a lot of Zelda II. I like that you can actually see a visual difference in you character as you buy new weapons and armor, too

I do have a few gripes about the game, though:

Locked doors stay locked, even after you use a key on them. I feel like locked doors should stay unlocked after you've used a key on them. There were a few times where I had to backtrack to a town because I forgot that I had to use another key to go through a door that I had already been through.

Some poor enemy placement. There were a lot of incidents where I was forced to take damage, and most of the time it wasn't THAT big a deal because there were usually enemies that would drop food nearby, but this was still very annoying at times. There were also some screens that had enemies waiting at the side of the area, and so as soon as you enter, you run into them and get knocked back to the previous screen. That was also really annoying at times.

Decreased Wing Boots time from Leveling Up. It almost doesn't feel worth it to get your rank up in this game because it doesn't really increase your stats, it just let's you start with more money if you die. I don't really understand why having a higher level should reduce the time that the Wing Boots are active, either. I mean, I didn't really use the boots except for where they were forced, but still.

Overall, I really enjoyed this game. I'd give it a 7.5/10. It does have some flaws, but it's still an otherwise fantastic NES game that's definitely worth checking out.

Look, if I can basically lock myself in my room for three solid weeks before ye olde Internet and win so can you haha.

But seriously it's one of those games like Zelda 1 where you have to try everything everywhere. The sheer amount of secret walls / bricks in LotW is nuts. Everything's this complicated maze with puzzles designed for (mostly) one particular character- and hopefully you brought that character down there to it.

Guardian Legend is a lot easier to pick up and play but aside from getting some of the corridor entrances to open up it's not too hard to figure out. Some of the corridors themselves are really hard though!
