Locals in the UK’s fattest town caused chaos by flocking to a new Domino’s Pizza that was giving away free food. Police had to be called to keep order in Whitehaven, Cumbria, after an offer of the first 100 pizzas free sparked a feeding frenzy.

Stunned witnesses said people pushed and shoved in an attempt to queue jump and some families abandoned their cars at the roadside in their rush to grab a freebie.

Andrew Burns, 26, said: “Cars ditched. Police called. All for a free pizza.” Another onlooker said: “The town was ridiculed for being the fattest in England and this is the result when a new pizza shop opens.

“Police were called because of the sheer volume of greedy people pushing and shoving.” A survey by Public Health England found Whitehaven’s borough of Copeland was the fattest in England in 2014, with a staggering 76 per cent of the population obese.

Yesterday Whitehaven mayor Raymond Gill complained there were too many fast food outlets in the area. The mayor or Whithaven complained about the number of fast food outlets available but said there isn’t anything the council can do about it

He said: “I am not having a go at Domino’s but it is terrible how many kebab shops and pizza outlets there are now. It’s a shame now people don’t really cook. There is nothing the council can do. There’s an obesity problem across the country.”

A spokesperson for Domino’s said: “We were delighted to receive such an enthusiastic welcome by the residents of Whitehaven and we look forward to bringing the unique taste of Domino’s to the area.

“Our menu caters for all tastes including lighter options.”

False, to an extent. What you eat is obviously important, and dominos has disgusting grease and tons of fat and sodium. Granted, it depends what they cook at home, and it could be just as bad or worse. But cooking is almost always healthier when compared to fast food and restaurants (though some are healthy, admittedly)

Doesn't matter what you cook or eat, when you consume it in insane amounts, that's when it gets unhealthy. And yes, that includes veggies.

I've never understood the frenzy that sometimes occurs when stuff is free.

I mean sure free is nice but I'd rather just pay for it and walk out with minimal trouble than deal with a huge line and crowds to get the free whatever it is.

I realize that, but at the same time I don't think most of the people rushing to get free food at fast food restaurants are doing it because they can't afford food otherwise.

At least it seems that way where I'm at. My statement applies more to people who could normally afford said free item.
