If it actually happens, it's because of his boneheaded refusal to back down over the wall

If there was someone who was tech-savvy in the administration, they could just implement laser technology to do what a wall would fail at, and for a much cheaper price.

Actual source of it already being implemented in India:

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/Laser-walls-activated-along-India-Pakistan-border-to-plug-gaps-in-vigil/articleshow/52012679.cms

"The "laser walls" or fence are being monitored by the BSF which guards the Indo-Pak border in Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Rajasthan and Gujarat.

The decision to install these laser walls was taken by the BSF two years ago keeping in mind the vulnerability of the border in these areas as barbed wire fencing could not be installed in many infiltration prone areas due to treacherous terrain or marshy riverine topography.

After the Pathankot terror attack, where it was suspected that terrorists crossed over from Pakistan by breaching the border from Bamiyal area in Punjab, Union home ministry and BSF sped up the deployment and activation of these walls along the long and winding border.

"The laser walls have started working and their functioning is being monitored. Preliminary results in detecting illegal movements are encouraging," the official said.

He said sensors were being monitored through a satellite-based signal command system and armed with night and fog operability tools.

Apart from these, four other pilot projects of similar kind in stretches of 30-40 kms of international border in Jammu and Gujarat and one in West Bengal along Indo-Bangla border have been approved by Home Ministry to secure Indian borders effectively."

Someone tweet this out to Trump or something.

Well, the government doesn't entirely shut down, and it's for a small enough time period that there aren't any direct ramifications to daily life. If the government completely shut down, I think you'd see why government is needed.

No, I prefer a brick/metal wall. For one, you won't be able to see a laser wall on Google Earth satellite imagery. And that would suck.

nothing bad happens to you.

Military families won't get paid, people depending on government subsidies to open a business won't get them, people depending on entitlements like Medicare/Social Security won't get it. People who have jobs in various federal offices like SS Administration, the folks who make passports, etc will be told to go home and come back when we're open again. etc.

Oh, and we don't pay our bills and USA's economy tanks. But who cares about that, right?

A laser wall would show up strong on infrared. Like a lightsaber across the top of Mexico

http://www.nature.com/news/nih-shutdown-effects-multiply-1.13872

I had multiple colleagues whose experiments were interrupted due to the shutdown. Sometimes timing really matters, and the shutdown likely caused numerous studies to have various time confounds.

Not to mention the effect of the sequestration that followed.

Why wouldn't I care? I have a couple friends with government jobs, and even if I didn't, it's a net loss for the country to have that many people out of work for a bit.

I think it's crazy how many people have this "Nothing bad happened to me individually, so nothing bad happened at all" mentality.

it's the same logic that leads to people believing that racism doesn't exist anymore, that climate change is a lie, and any number of other issues.

Pretty much the only reason he was elected was because of the promise of tax cuts. That's basically all there is to his support.
