if you don't tip the pizza delivery guy you better start ordering from somewhere else. they will remember and they won't care if your pizza isn't delivered fast. some will probably even do something to it.

I've never tipped for pizza, and it always arrives in the typical 30-40 minutes. If they are doing to something to contaminate it, it isn't working, because it always still tastes delicious.

You're pretty terrible for not tipping, but I will say that whenever I see an order for someone I know doesn't tip, I take their order last. It's especially fun when they ask for cheese and peppers and tell them I don't have any on me when I always do.

Or if I get the pleasure of taking their order, I tell them our delivery time is something absurd like 2 hours and I make sure they don't get any good deals if they still want delivery.

They wanna waste my time by not tipping, I'm gonna waste theirs.

Your company is wasting your time by not paying you properly. Deliver privately if you want the customer to pay you.

Personally I would prefer to pay the driver an extra $3 then have to pay $30 for my $13 pizza.

But hey if you prefer to pay more for your food, then good for you I guess.

Seriously though. Why do some people think it's a good idea to piss off the employees who handle your food?

Because I shouldn't have to bribe the driver to do his damn job correctly.

I don't like tipping for pizza...so I pick it up myself. You want to be lazy, pay for it.

You do pay for it. I've never ordered a pizza for deliver that didn't tack on a delivery fee. Why the hell am I paying extra for delivery if that fee isn't going to the delivery driver?

The delivery fee usually does not go directly to the delivery guy. He might get as little as 5% of that fee to help pay for his vehicle's fuel and maintenance. The fee covers the rising cost of ingredients, hourly wages for employees other than the drivers, the store's automobile insurance for non-owned vehicles and all other business expenses. It shouldn't be considered a payment to the delivery guy for their service. Ask the delivery guy if he gets any of the fee.

I know the delivery fee doesn't go to the driver, but you didn't explain what it is there for.

Yes I did.

Nah, I worked for Dominos for awhile and while the driver did get compensation (basically it was about a straight dollar per deliver at my extremely large delivery area... I checked my miles and my gallons and found it did not cover driving costs at all, not personal vehicle use wear and tear or city driving or fuel costs. It covered basically nothing. The delivery fee at my area was higher than the amount we were compensated, and while I'm sure that amount I was paid per delivery was offset by the delivery fee, the fee was higher than my compensation by a solid amount.

What the delivery fee ACTUALLY covers is cost to deliver (that is, we'd deliver you 2 tiny lava crunch cakes and a 20 ounce sprite because, while the margins for delivering so little food is so thin, the fee helps offset it (also, we sold those 20 ounces for a murderously high price, so that helps).

So yeah, the delivery fee can basically be considered "the fee that offsets the fact that taking the time to deliver your food costs more in labor than letting you stand there for 45 minutes in the lobby watching people not make your pizza" and not at all close to a tip to the driver.

For me, personally... I didn't tip much before working there, but after I left my tipping strategy for most realistic monetary amounts is "round up to the next multiple of 5, then add $5". So if the price, was, say, $23, I'd push it up to $30 for the tip. Only because I know now that I am paid a hell of a lot better than these guys and I know it makes a delivery experts job a little better (we talked about how much we were making that night a ton, it could change the mood of the night).

That is what we would get from the delivery fee as well, and the delivery fee was $2.50, it used to be an even 50/50 split but the owner raised his delivery fee.

Ok? Do you not understand though that if suddenly restaurant owners have to increase all of their labor costs that food prices will go up dramatically? Restaurants have a difficult enough time turning a profit as it is.

So? If they can't operate while offering a fair wage, they don't deserve to operate at all. Remember, other countries with a definite minimum wage have takeout too.

Exactly.

The only pizza delivery chain is now Pizza Hut and their orders all have a 25% mandatory delivery fee

Good job

Really? Our local Pizza Hut charges a straight 4$ for delivery, no matter what you order.

mine does $3, and it explicitly says "this is not a tip" if you order delivery online, and the minimum you have to spend to get delivery is $10.

so if you want to take advantage of their current deal, a large two topping pizza for $7.99 and get it delivered, you have to spend another $2, of which they don't have anything that costs $2. not even a soda.

then the delivery fee is tacked on top of that, so now your order is like $15.

or i could just spend the two minutes and drive to the joint and pickup my $8 pizza that would actually be $8 goddamn dollars.

I would tip if the driver if he was honestly doing me a legit favor. If I called up McDonalds and got one their back-line workers to drive a couple of Quarter Pounders over to my house, I'd tip the shit out him. But when it is your job to deliver food to people house's, you are not going above and beyond the duties of your job, so I'm not going to go above and beyond in what I pay.
