Autistic son was sad that Blockbuster closed down, so his parents built him his own video store

More like they built it to take a picture of it so it can go viral for upvotes.

I think they just built it so their son could have a blockbuster.

Why are you guys such bitter nerds here? Goddamn.

On topic: This is sweet but the weirdest part of this image is that on top of all of those kids movies, you see The Town and The Judge...

I don't think most people over the age of 30 give a shit about upvotes, at least compared to their disabled son's happiness. Good for him.

But wtf, there was a Blockbuster store that was recently closed?

I just don't know if it is right to perpetuate the idea of an imaginary blockbuster in your child's mind, autistic or no. Isn't this gas lighting in a way? How is he ever going to learn to cope with loss if his parents just recreate everything to avoid any changes in his environment? The blockbuster is gone. He needs to be able to cope with it.

I mean if his hamster dies do they replace it with an identical one without him noticing?

I'm assuming he's like my younger brother - low "mental age" and level of social function. Obsessive-compulsive disorder can go hand-in-hand with autism, and my brother happens to have his routine centered around watching movies on his TV. Things he can rewind and watch parts over again. Movies are predictable. They're habit. They don't change. Perfect for someone with a routine.

We still have a VHS deck and frequent the local Goodwill as part of his routine to get more tapes and DVDs. I think he has about fifteen copies of Ferris Bueller's Day Off, and watches it several times daily. More than a few Sesame Street tapes, too.

I can completely understand this level of parenting where special-needs treatment is required. As a "co-parent" and guardian, I live it.

Huge changes in routine aren't as easy to "just deal with" for some on the spectrum. We're talking massive meltdowns.

I'm going to start "writing" a book, filled with quotes from CE. I'll title it "Why You're Still A Virgin". I'll be a New York Times bestseller within 6 months under the comedy genre. Maybe these quotes will be my prologue.

So did I actually. We'd rent mario party when we'd sleep at each other's houses. I remember renting Harvest Moon 64 there for the hell of it and being amazed at how much fun farming in a video game was
