the issue is that states themselves are irrelevant; cities and metropolitan areas should be the primary unit of political organization

No, we didn't like you treating humans as property. Lincoln might have been motivated purely by keeping the union together, but most of the passion of the North was from justified disgust over slavery.

I mean we've moved pretty far from the Constitution, sure. The thing is, the south had some legitimate points at the time for secession. As an example the slave trade was actually the main source of the economy for the south. The issues are pretty far removed from things like that today and basically there are just crazy people and sane people, but somehow our government has ended up with far more of the former in upper positions. If we had a Civil war, exactly what would the platform be? That American politics is a failed experiment? That we need some sort of nebulous social justice? That we need to be hyper nationalist? Ultimately the differing viewpoints have one thing in common and it's that many Americans do not belong in America and should simply move to a country that supports their ideals more. America wasn't initially such a melting pot anyway, so there isn't any check on wild views.

Of course, you could make similar claims about the internet I think.

Most the red states are poor as church mice so I don't think they'd even survive very long. I don't know how they're so broke when they're supposedly the party of fiscal responsibility.
