Yesterday, a localizer for the publisher XSEED took a dramatic stance on what he saw as potential censorship, asking his company to remove his name from the credits of the upcoming JRPG Akiba’s Beat after the developers removed a controversial phrase involving the KKK from the game. It doesn’t make me chuckle on its own, but in the context of appearing on a sign in a busy part of Tokyo, where the business in question obviously had NO IDEA what it meant? That’s pretty funny, if you’ve ever been to Japan.
“Engrish” exists as a concept for a reason, and a sign that says “KKK witches” is so out there, so WRONG, that it appearing on a sign is definitely worthy of at LEAST a chuckle, for the absurdity alone. I guess the idea is, I believe it would be funny to the game’s target audience, those being Japanophiles. Because it really is very “Japan.” It looks like he wanted to put a joke where there was none. A year ago, Lipschultz protested when ages were removed from girls’ profiles in Senran Kagura Burst, a game Kotaku’s Brian Ashcraft reports was made because the developer wanted to put boobs in a 3DS game. Lipschultz almost quit. “Changing a 15-year-old to an 18-year-old would suddenly recontextualize a lot of character actions and motivations, turning characters who come across as ‘well-meaning but young and inexperienced’ into characters who simply come across as immature and misguided,” he told former Kotaku reporter Patrick Klepek for a feature on video game “censorship.” Christ, does this guy have a habit of making mountains out of molehills or something? They never de-aged the characters in Senran Kagura, their ages just aren't explicitly stated in the manual or profiles. They're still listed as "1st-year high school student" or whatever. It's really weird that he's harping on about retaining the games original meaning when the Western context completely changes what the joke is. He personally just wants to keep it because he finds it funny.

It means something completely different to American players than it does to Japanese players, and it was not the original intention. As a localizer it is literally his job to make sure stuff like that doesn't go through.
