Donald Trump has REVERSED his decision on NAFTA and told Mexican and Canadian leaders he will not pull the US out of the agreement after he made the surprise announcement in a read out of calls.

He said he agreed "not to terminate NAFTA at this time"

Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau agreed to proceed to renegotiate the trade deal that would benefit all 3 countries

Trump blamed NAFTA for american job losses and regularly called it a disaster during his campaign.

This comes just hours after a senior official said Trump was pulling an execuive order to pull out of it as it rattled markets and caused the Mexican Peso and Canadian Dollar to go lower against the US dollar...

The disruption of NAFTA would wreak havoc on the auto sector and other industries which will hit profits at companies benefiting from zero-level tariffs and Mexico's low labour costs.

NAFTA would also hit US farmers whose export to Mexico have grown under NAFTA as a business group representing several big North American multinationals accused Trump of not having a clear idea of what the agreement covers

And, in general, NAFTA kinda fucks over the US not just in allowing Mexico to undercut US labor but because Mexico and Canada use VAT taxes while the US does not, which means that the US is effectively paying tariffs in a lopsided deal.

now if he fails to renegotiate and the US doesn't pull out then he's going back on a campaign promise. That being said, I'll definitely acknowledge the possibility that he's said contradictory things on this subject and he is, by logical necessity, going back on one of those, but the only one I remember is him saying he'd try to renegotiate before tearing it up.
