Reddit is what Gamefaqs failed to be a Masterpiece. I think allowing porn, not being limited to a gaming site, and allowing users to created board from the beginning is what allowed reddit to grow so fast.

CE is really the only message board site I know of that isn't an echo chamber. There are a ton of people who are on opposite sides of pretty much any topic you can think of here and that's the best thing about it. Make a topic about any social issue and it inevitably spirals into a debate. It's not typically a productive conversation, but at least it hardly ever is a complete circle jerk with no opposition like what happens on reddit where any opposition in subreddits simply gets downvoted or outright banned. --- woof ... for how popular it is, reddit is a thing that doesn't seem to exist outside of the internet. i've even had 4chan brought up in casual conversations, but never reddit.
