Just had to empty a disgusting garbage can of something rotten and there is more of it to be dumped after it is properly taken care of by hazmat. Yet it seems like I can still smell it across the building.

Well smell is the sense most closely tied to memory. I've never run this by a neuroscientist but I've heard it through word of mouth and also experienced it. I'm sure science is behind it all somehow.

Smell is caused by chemical compounds released into the air by whatever is causing the smell. When you remove the source, the air still hangs around for a while and that is what you smell
e.g. Someone farts and leaves the room, they are gone but the gas remains --- rip imgcake ... Copied to Clipboard!

A fart needs time to disperse (assuming you're wearing pants) --- turbopuns ... Copied to Clipboard!
