I read some kind of theory that they die when they use the teleporter, and are just cloned into the destination with their memories. Is that actually true? That's creepy as fuck >_>

Not cloned, literally rebuilt down to every single atom.

Thats how I saw it. You're literally dematerializing. So you die and an organism built in your image is created.

But aside from that yeah theres a bunch of times characters are killed off due to transporter issues. Usually just extras and not the main characters though.

This.

It's not so much a theory that you die but more a debate on whether or not that's really "you" when you reappear.

Pretty sure there's even people in universe that don't like transporters for that reason.

I think they do, kill you and clone you. They is how you got two Rikers since the Transporter is cloning people. Hell one time the Captain died in some space gas and they used his last Transporter pattern to bring him back.

In the show, the transporter rips you apart atom by atom, and reassembles you atom by atom in the same location.

Every atom is in the exact same location relative to your body along with all it's atomic properties.

You're never killed, you're not cloned.

If I'm not mistaken, the actual mechanics of the teleporters are not explained to the crew. To them, it's teleportation but the truth is the original body gets destroyed and a perfect copy is created at the destination.

There was some sort of storm that occured while transporting Riker, some weird thing happened in that special circumstance that caused 2 rikers.

It's not something they understand the mechanism of how it happened, just the end result.

Generally Transporters don't clone.

No, I'm pretty sure everyone knows how it works.

We have had the Transporter change people into kids, If they were just putting thing back togerther this would not seem possible. The Transporter uses the atoms they have on "file" to try to build a copy of the person. This along with what happens to Riker shows us something key to the Cloning Theory. That the Transporter effects Mass. With Riker it pulled mass out of know where . If it was just moving stuff around then the extra 185 pounds would have come from some place. And that place would be the cloning process.

The Federation has matter/energy conversion. They're not pulling mass from nowhere, they're converting energy into mass. It's basically just replication but with people.
