I suppose they fell from popularity over what to me was a pretty unfair insistence that they were all the same, and when they tried to become different in response, they started sucking.

I do remember hearing that argument a lot back in the PS2 days, but really each game had something major that set it apart gameplay-wise even in addition to new levels, new skaters, all that good stuff.

2 had manuals, dynamic levels and the "big drop" mechanic. 3 had reverts, double/triple flips and expanded flatlanding. 4 gave every trick (except specials) a tweak but in fairness otherwise didn't do much new stuff. Underground started pushing it with the cars and stuff but I did like the ability to get off the board... if only story mode didn't have those terrible platforming sections. After that, I stopped playing for a while but Proving Ground had the push mehanic, rigging, nail the trick, all kinds of good stuff.

They got the license to use his name in 10 years or something like that.
One day they discovered that the time was almost over and rushed out Tony Hawk 5 moments before their license expired.
Renewing the license would cost more than what its worth.

All good things must come to an end. The last few were mediocre or sucked and skateboarding isn't as popular as it was, sadly.

There's always the Skate! series. If they make any more at least. They're different though.

I still see skateboarders around my neighborhood so it's not completely dead.

I think it just lost its counterculture appeal or it got so mainstream it's not seen as unique anymore.

Skating got way more mainstream when all the kids who couldn't do it bought longboards, learned how to ride them, and decided that meant they were awesome skaters now.

I think this is the main reason. I know kids still skate, but it's nowhere near as big a thing as it was twenty or even ten years ago.

Didn't Activision officially kill the series when they found out the license was expiring and released a demo as a full priced AAA title. Granted it was so they could finish it later and just release the full game as a patch, but fuck them.

They should make a Tony Hawk game set in the future where they discovered Tony Hawk's skateboard and use traces of his DNA to revive him so that he can teach humanity to pull off wicked sick moves because skateboarding is the only form of vehicle travel that isn't outlawed in their time.

@Tropicalwood
EA got nothing to do with the Tony Hawk games.
Tony Hawk might help EA with Skate 4, but that is the only connection they got.
Activision is not EA.

I can only assume that like others have mentioned it just kinda fell off in popularity/relevance so none of the companies have seen a big enough market for it to bother pursuing it. The only reason Activision did is because their Tony Hawk contract was about to expire so they churned out that turd just in time to squeeze the last few dollars out of the name, banking on nostalgia.

Still, I also think it's kinda off that literally nobody is making one, as far as polished full games go and not some steam greenlight stuff. Even if it's not as popular as it once was, surely they're still some demographic for it and it's completely untapped.

It is off that no one is making any, and that's where the money is for a game company...they'd be the only skate game in town. And all they have to do is make it as fun as the first couple of Tony Hawks. And so it puzzles me.

I wish there was an HD collection of the first 7 games, but between real-world people likeness, music, secret skaters like Spiderman and Darth Maul, and all those ads on the vert ramps and stuff, it'll probably never happen unless they charge like $200 to cover all those licenses lol

Maybe the reason no one is making them is because there's not enough market interest in them anymore? Especially with how the recent Tony Hawk game turned out.
