I'd do something like that with my significant other. I far prefer doing things to prove that "we're great together" over "look how great I am and deep my love is for you". But then again, this is also how I feel about engagement rings. "Here, let me give someone else $6k+ so you can have a piece of jewelry". It's a one sided, burnt offering.

But if his partner enjoyed the labor then that's their dynamic.
