Just curious what the reasoning is here, I don't see it.

Also, can someone explain why people have 1995 getting that far? Literally the only game in 1995 is Chrono Trigger, can't see that beating 1987 for 'smart gamerfaqs', especially given the stock of the Zelda franchise at this moment.

Nov/Dec 2001 might be the best 2 months in gaming history.

Gamecube
Xbox

Smash Melee
Halo
MGS2
FFX

1998 as a whole is better by a fair amount, but 2 consoles and 4 games that routinely are considered top 50ish of all time

Didn't realize that was the favored pick. Went with 1997 without giving it much thought, and that's not a pick I have any real doubt about.

No-one has a clue how heavily consoles are going to be weighted by people?

Even if people give weight to consoles, the Gamecube and Xbox are not exactly paragons of quality and strength.

ICYMI, Melee beat FFVII in the BGE20 contest. Looked it up just now.

Take that how you will.

You sort of answered your own question about 1997 here. If you ask me, 1997 is basically a one-game-year also. Goldeneye has some strength, but I don't think it's anywhere near what this board makes it out to be. There's also SotN, but that's not really a super powerhouse either, and I expect it will have a decent amount of overlap with FFVII anyways.

Basically I think having a lot of good games that cover many different fanbases (this second part is key) is a lot more important than having one really strong game. I don't even have 1997 making it that far since I have it losing to 2000 (which I expect should be close), but if it makes it to 2001 I'm expecting it to lose handily.

FF7 has fallen so hard that I strongly believe that not only a game like LttP can challenge it, but games like RBY and CT beat FF7.

The hierarchy is this imo:

1) OoT
2) RBY
3) CT
4) FF7
5) LttP
6) SMW

Consoles, depth of games, the decline of FF7, the strength of 2001's top games.

More variety and depth. 97 has the strongest game of the bunch in FFVII, but Melee should kill all of the Nintendo games there (Goldeneye, Mario Kart 64, Star Fox). I thought 1997 had a ton of deptg at first but I began to question how popular many of these games have remained, especially the multiplayer-heavy Nintendo ones.

Fair enough, though I thought FF7 has been rebounding since vote totals started taking a shit

I picked 2001, but I considered it an upset when I picked it and I assumed that 1997 would be the favorite - I picked it on the assumption that I needed at least one really well-called upset to win. The groupthink is making me have serious second thoughts, it feels like the classic 'overthought' match.

2001 has more diversity. After FFVII, GoldenEye and Castlevania: SotN 1997 doesn't have much else outside of more second tier Nintendo 64 games; Mario Kart 64, Star Fox 64, Diddy Kong Racing which may or may not be featured in the match.

SSBM, FFX and Halo are guaranteed to be featured and then you could potential have GTA3, MGS2, Paper Mario which will help counter the lower tier 1997 games and help close the gap between the upper tier 1997 games.

To be honest it'll be a close match.

I'm not sure FFVII even beats Melee straight up at this point but with FFX there to SFF a few votes away I don't see 1997 winning
