That says it was released in 1989 for North America. We're going by NA dates.

I fixed an error on wikipedia just a couple of weeks ago where the "2001 in gaming" page listed Pokemon Crystal as a GBA game. Be careful with data on Wikipedia. A lot of it for gaming pages is not meticulously kept accurate.
