and with their own exclusive content....at this rate i think it's worse than simply paying for cable because at least with cable your channels aren't constantly being replaced by new ones that you don't care about

like how streaming services often discard shows and then replace them with shows you don't like as much

Most businesses are out to generate revenue, so I'd hazard a guess that the reason is money.

That is literally the reason I stopped watching cable:

MTV went from a music video station to a reality TV station
Discovery went from a scientific station to a reality TV station
History went from a history station to a reality TV station
MTV 2 went from a music video station to a reality TV station
Nick at Night started showing reruns from the 90's
Even the network channels have turned into crappy sitcom factories.

edit: and VH1 went from a music video station to a reality TV station

SERIOUSLY, WHAT DOES CABLE HAVE AGAINST MUSIC VIDEOS???

it's probably due to the fact that people would watch these music videos online and viewership for music video based shows would be in the toilet

here's a big question....why the hell does nickelodeon even have Teenick at this point or nicktoons? both channels are a waste of space

Teenick just shows garbo tween sitcoms and only becomes decent during the late night hours when they air old school nick content

but Nicktoons is just nick's dumping ground for shows they don't care about

I know this is difficult for you to imagine but you are not the target audience for every single TV channel or show that is created.

I hate this too.

Like how is this better than cable? Honestly? You've got the same issue (shows that don't exist on any other service) but now you're paying for all of it a la carte.

Do people really need that much tv to watch though? I spend $12 a month on Netflix and they have more shows than I have time for.

I'm even planning to "splurge" for a few months on HBO Now when Game of Thrones returns, and using that time to catch up on Veep, Silicon Valley, Animals, etc. at the same time. Even then, that's less than $30 for all the shows I could ever want.

Sure, it'd be nice if one service had everything, but that was cable and people realized they were paying for shit they never watched. Now you can have two or three streaming services and pay half of what cable would cost, and have the option to cancel it and switch to a different one at pretty much any time as well.

Are you saying mid 20's man children coated in cheeto dust and spaghettio stains who haven't left the house in months are NOT the primary demographic for children's TV shows?

Well it isn't like you need all of them

I keep a few monthly subscriptions to things at a time but if I find something new I cancel an old one. Only have so much free time after all.

The ala carte isn't the issue. The price is. If I go through cable or satellite the price per channel is about 30-50 cents per channel. If I have to get each channel through its own separate streaming service I am paying 5-10 dollars. Ala cart may make the channels more expensive, but they shouldn't be more than 2-3 if you are still only giving one channel's worth of content.

Netflix and hulu are worth the additional price because they offer more content than one channel provides. They rival cable for a far cheaper price, but I would switch back to cable in an instant if I could get 30 channels that I choose for under $50 a month.

don't exaggerate. he left his house to play pokemon go but then decided since all the pokemon didn't congregate in his yard that it was a piece of trash app that wasn't worth playing.

We don't. But each service wants to make money directly rather than indirectly. It's usually more profitable.

Eeyup. It's not meant to make things easier for the consumers, it's all about which companies buy which distribution licenses. Some services make exclusive distribution deals, and shows disappear as licenses are allowed to expire (whether because there isn't enough demand to justify them or to prompt users to explore other content).

They don't make money.

not just that, but "reality TV" shows cost jack shit to make compared to just about anything else. all you need are a handful of nobody attention whores or washed up celebs that are a rent check away from knife fighting hobos in a backalley to make rent and a catty producer instigating shit off-camera. the rest is just a camera crew and an equally catty editor and there's your entire season of Vapid House Whores of Topeka in 6 weeks work.
