Network equipment for the new corporate office - ~$500k, ordered, and pieces are arriving.
We now have a BGP ASN
Internet provider orders are in flight.

Can't wait until all of this is set up and working. Gonna be a beast of a network.

We now have a BGP ASN

what is that

BGP is the major routing protocol used in the networking world that allows an entity to send traffic to and from another entity, allowing the routers to dynamically choose the best path. One of the metrics it uses for best path selection is the autonomous system (AS) path. Each organization that has successully applied for one is assigned one or more specific autonomous system numbers (ASNs) to identify the network equipment under their control in this regard.

One of Comcast's ASNs is 7922, and one of Google's is 15169.

Comcast: http://viewdns.info/asnlookup/?asn=7922
Google: http://viewdns.info/asnlookup/?asn=15169

A couple others I know off the top my head:

Level3: 1
CenturyLink: 209

So, for example, if you have Comcast as an ISP and you want to go to Google.com, the routers in between each organization use BGP to determine the best path to get there. The BGP AS path from your perspective would read: 7922 15169, assuming the traffic goes directly from Comcast's network to Google's network.

If the traffic path goes from Comcast to Level3 to Google, then the AS path would read: 7922 1 15169

Also, the execs relented on the cost of the network :D

It'll only be $11,000/year more than we're already paying for a fully fault tolerant network, including our MPLS connections.
