Not even gamers need it afaik. Only time it ever made a difference for me was when I worked with lots of data in Excel.

I could see a sufficiently complicated spreadsheet being computationally expensive. Which actually makes me wonder if recent versions of Excel can utilize GPU acceleration for stuff like that.

Normal person? A lot of people have jobs that would benefit from hyperthreading. What's a normal person?
Need? Ehh

They're putting these chips in a lot of laptops and surfaces though so it's just going to be standard in many cases.

If you're processing a lot of video/audio that can be pretty intensive. Still seems like we're at the point where a lot of power is just going to waste though.

I'm still using an i5 2500K and I really feel like I could use an upgrade, and when I do, I figure I might as well get an i7 since the price gap really isn't that much these days.

Doesn't Microsoft have a separate application for really large spreadsheets? Forgot what it was called.

Is that really taking up that much processing power? I frequently use a lot of Microsoft products all at once, would this actually help?

There were a lot of formulas and tens of thousands of rows of data. It made a difference whether I worked on the spreadsheet on an i5 vs an i7.

Xeon. Depending on the chip and what you're running, the extra cores and cache are going to make a huge difference.

There is a Xenon that is literally the same thing as an i7 except it's missing some specialized functionality that doesn't apply to a headless machine. Can't remember what it does. Could be that that's the one your old servers have.

Access is still kickin

Access is a shity local database with a User friendly UI built in that isn't compatible with anything else without wrapper libraries. It's not a spreadsheet thing at all.

Nobody uses Access databases anymore. I honestly don't know why MS keeps making new versions.

My dad does. He loves it.

I've never understood why.

Though in fairness, he has made quite a lot of money off of his side business of making Access systems for completely unsavvy businesses like camps and whatnot.
