Popular vote would allow disproportionate control of 99% of the country by tiny but dense population centers that couldn't care less about anyone or any issue outside of their city.

I'm not quite sure why we should nerf the votes of people in large communities simply because they're in large communities.

Yes, large cities would have more influence.

That would be because (surprise) more people live there.

Problem is that the system is winner-takes-all. So they wouldn't have a small say, they'd have no say at all.

The power is distributed by the amount of electoral votes each state is given, which is influenced by their population. California gets 55 votes for being the massive state it is while a state like North Dakota gets around 8.

They still have congress members, and if they agree with other parts of the country they can pull together for a win.

Why doesn't it? All of rural America can't overcome a few major cities. Giving all the voting power to a few states would cripple our system and cause a revolt. European countries can get away with this system because everyone is part of the same state with similar values...not so in the US.

As I pointed out above. "Rural America" is already given 2 senators + several representatives (depending on the state).

One man, one vote. Especially when the leader for the entire country is being chosen, it makes sense to make it each individual's decision.

Pretty much

It's true that in a pop vote system the candidates would visit large population centers (because that's where most of this country lives)

Though the current system is hardly better. All they do now is focus on visiting a bunch of random states that have a voting population just diverse enough that they can influence it their way.

Hardly much of an improvement

Not at all. You give rural districts in Michigan, Pennsylvania, etc. a fighting chance. Without the EC Detroit, Philadelphia, Miami, and other major cities decide every election. It goes from state power to city power. That's moronic.

You do realize the popular vote would not eliminate the ability of these places to elect their own state/federal representatives, right?

I think the best compromise would be direct election of the electoral college instead of having them be appointed party figures by representatives.

Remove one of the many degrees of indirect representation to force those who elect the president to be more accountable.
