like, my friend wastes a lot of food (regularly leaves plates unfinished, buys bottles of coke only to drink a third or two of it before throwing it into the garbage, etc.), and it frustrates me cause we both come from poor households and we only ever hang out in san francisco (so the least he could do is give his leftovers to a homeless person or whatever)

anyway, it'll go like:

-

(at dinner)

me: dude, you're really gonna waste all of that?

him: well sorry i don't care about all of the starving kids in africa like you do, [me]!"

-

yeah...

like, a totally random outburst about something i've never even mentioned

wtf

uh, no, it's not "bad for him" to finish his plate, nor is it a "one instance" thing since he does this all of the time

it's not even about the money, either

it's more that he should know better considering his background and not take things for granted

and even if he really couldn't finish it, we're in san francisco where there are plenty of homeless to give your leftovers to as opposed to throwing it out

but if thinking like this makes me a "fun" person, then w/e

My roommate currently has three open bottles of water in the fridge right now. How do you drink three different bottles of water and not finish any of them? He regularly buys a bunch of groceries every other week that I either end up eating or throwing away because he doesnt cook the damn food and it spoils.

Wow, I thought it was gonna be something else, you know every time me and my friend get into an argument they get really angry and just call me a "douche bag" whenever I start winning.

Anyway why would he give his leftovers to a homeless person? If he's done, he's done, and I recommend you get over it.

Also out of pure curiosity, do you regularly give leftovers to homeless people?

This is probably one of the few topics I've seen where it is 100% unjustified for CE to do it. Usually there's at least some kind of point to their rebuking the TC, but in this case they're literally trying to justify food waste.

Overeating is bad for him. If he feels full, he should stop eating. When I said in one instance, I'm comparing the two options when a person buys too much food.

1. He doesn't finish it. There's zero additional loss here. He pays the same amount for the meal regardless.

2. He finishes it. He has to force himself to eat when full which sucks, and he's eating unneeded calories that can lead to obesity.

Your lack of understanding of what people mean when they talk is the problem here, not your friend. Additionally, the homeless do not fucking want your left over scraps. Don't act so damn noble about it. If you guys really want to make a difference, buy less, no more than you need, and donate that money.

I don't think he was really trying to argue per se, but just get you off his case by pointing out that you're nagging like a mother to a child.

Off-topic, though, the starving kids in Africa thing is the dumbest thing parents have ever come up with. It doesn't motivate kids to eat their vegetables, and I can't even figure out how it's supposed to. There are starving kids in Africa? How awful. If I eat myself into a coma, this will surely make them feel better. Any kid who thinks about it for two seconds will reply to their parents that we should send it to them. Now the kid doesn't have to eat and the kids in Africa get this food that they want so badly.

Of course nobody ever had to tell me that. I didn't like my vegetables but I liked food so...

I don't know why, but my response as a kid was always we should buy less food, so the food prices don't go up. No idea why supply and demand was in my head at that age.
