The earliest I can think of is Final Fantasy VII, but one area I'm weak on is PC RPGs from the 90s and I feel like it might have been done there at some point.

I've never played all the way through it. From what I played Ace is an amnesiac who doesn't remember anything at all and is finding it out at the same time as the player, so he's not really saying anything that you can't trust, but maybe that changes as you progress?

Pretty sure that's just a poor simulation of an acid trip.

The TVTropes page for this mentions Spacequest, but I've never played it and I think it may just be referring to the narrator being snarky.

I'd be interested in this as well. All the games I can think of are more recent than FF7. There's the old Hitchhiker's Guide text adventure, but that's more a case of an antagonistic narrator becoming an actual character in the story.

Hmm, I guess Metal Gear on MSX played with this a bit. You can think of Big Boss as the narrator (as your commander at FOXHOUND, you can call him/he calls you on the codec for comments on whatever is going on) but toward the end his orders start to become ways to get you lost or killed, even telling you to reset the game console, and of course at the very end it turns out he's been the leader of Outer Heaven since the beginning and intended for you to die when he sent you on this mission
