Because if there's anything I've ever wanted to pay a monthly fee for, it's to find out who one person thinks the top 10 MVP candidates of the 2017 NBA playoffs are.

they have nothing to lose by doing it. People will still access their website for the free content....they know a handful of people will be click baited into paying for random articles. Its not like they lose money if no one does.

How else are they going to make money? A huge chunk of browsers are using ad-blockers now, so there aren't a lot of options left for them.

edit: basically what Vipa said

I got an ESPN the Magazine subscription like 6 years ago just because it came with a copy of the new Madden. $50 for the game + subscription instead of $60 to buy the game by itself.

I still get Insider access from that even though the subscription ended after like 2 years and I've never been charged again. It's nice to not have like half their actual analysis articles blocked off, but I certainly wouldn't pay for Insider by itself.
