Looks like this will be the matchup.

Personally, there are more great games in the NES/SNES years (95, 91, 87) but I guess I can understand why these two years showed up.

I guess I'd take 98 - Baldur's gate and Starcraft being the biggest reasons IMO.

I agree. I'll take the golden age of 2D gaming over the early days of 3D gaming. 98 does hold a special place in my heart because of Pokemon R/B and Starcraft (although it was Brood War that I really got into).

Also, 2001 > 1997.

It should be 98 vs 01. Although, most of the years that made it to the quarterfinals make sense. 2004 is definitely deeper and of higher quality than 2003, but 03 had Pokemon and Zelda. Other than that, the contest has actually gone about as it should. 04 losing to 94 was really the only obvious "wrong" I saw

98 is definitely the best year ever though. I mean look at all the games that came out that year. Enormous hits like OOT, MGS, Half Life, and several other great games as 3D started to really take over

Probably. GameFAQS loves JRPGs, and Chrono Trigger is the king with that genre. 94 was a great year too, it was just really top heavy. Not a lot of depth like 2004 or 2001 or 1998

Yea that 2001 v 1995 match really changed things. I'm sure 95 is decently strong with having chrono trigger but for 2001 to do that poorly against it does not bode well for it beating 1997 unfortunately.

what makes 01 look so toast is that most people would probably assume 96 (which could beat 2000) would put up a solid fight against 95 with the possibility of beating it. For it to get thrashed by 97 means 01 looks dead in the water because it barely snuck by 95 which in theory would barely sneak by 96

1998 is the GOAT. Metal Gear Solid would be good enough, but it's also got Resident Evil 2 among other top titles.

because it has 2 really strong games on this site (Super Metroid and FF6) compared to simply one really strong game on this site (Super Mario World)


there are other strong games featured in both years but none that would get past the third round of a games tournament. These 3 all made the final 16 last time and could likely go a step further

If the pictures are right, 2001 should beat 1997. Melee equals FFVII, FFX beats SotN, and MGS2 beats Goldeneye. The depth of both years can be speculated on, but I don't think the difference will be big enough to matter.
