1996 wouldn't have gotten crushed as hard as it did if that were the case. Mario 64 is a good place to turn if you want a strong Nintendo game and don't want to vote for something tangentially related to FFVII.

The difference here is that 2001 has the depth to take on 97.

And it's a shitty competitor to The Show. I told Dabu that he should produce more episodes for each season of "No Respect Gamers". There were only 3 episodes for this contest and just 2 episodes for the 2015 Games Contest. In both contests, no episodes were produced after the first matches started to discuss the actual match results that are coming in. I told Dabu that he should produce at least one episode every 2 weeks (or more often) to discuss the actual match results and then talk about his opinions on the future matches based on the match results we've gotten so far. That's what Dabu needs to do in order to be a more serious competitor to The Show.

Heh, a throwback to WWF No Mercy. I remember it was easily a minority pick in the Oracle, but the WWF No Mercy people were hyping up that game so much that I was legitimately scared it would pull an upset. So I only picked the winner with less than 53% in the Oracle.

To get round 2 picture submissions (but with 8 games per year), we'd have to do 1 match per day and that would only increase the length of the contest by 4 days.

I feel like this rotating match picture format would probably be used in the future console contest as well, so it's important we transition to 1 match per day as soon as possible in that contest.

Listening to this analysis on 1997's depth, I have to mention something before we get too far on the 97 > 98 train.

97 had by far and away the best and advantageous picture of the contest. The 1-2 punch was so damn potent and definitely played a part in that dominating performance of 96. But, can we guarantee that it will have that same rotation or something similar as it makes as run at the finals?

Even if us picsmiths come through on our end, we could very well see 1997's games in a different order come the finals and I think 97 needs that, especially since I don't see 98 going without OoT or Pokemon in the first two lines of the pic.

I felt like the order of both 91 and 94's pictures was really wonky, but it was balanced.

Simpsons, Lemmings, and Daytona USA should have been in the bottom. And they both had some serious snubs (the SNES console, Super Castlevania IV, Mega Man X). So, both sides had a case when it come to picture dickery.

And let's not ever mention the Turtles re-release. Reshelled was a disaster.

Heh, that just makes my point even bigger.

Also, going back to 2000's match picture, the ideal picture would have been GoldSilver/Majora/FF9/DiabloII, right? I think I understand why that wasn't the picture, and it goes back to why I didn't really think 2000 was going to win that match. 2000 was too reliant on it's big name sequels. That line up is essentially Pokemon 2, Ocarina of Time 2, Final Fantasy IX, and Diablo 2. Deus Ex was there because it was an original idea to come out of that year, while at least Perfect Dark is only Goldeneye 2 in spirit.

So, I was right about 2000's reliance on sequels being its undoing, but right for the wrong reasons is still right, I guess.
