My brother wants me to help him write an novel. I think it should be about 40 chapters. Right?

Number of chapters is irrelevant.

Word count is what you should focus on.

As to what one needs to do to write a novel, I suggest you start writing.

Becoming a wordsmith helps..I'm trying to write something too, but I'm kind of facing some harsh realities of my quality.

(It is not a novel).

Write from the heart and from experience and form your idea around that. I'm 42,000 words into my novel right now and it's a lot easier when you have life experience.

Well, it's a story that we is based on our life but it's something that we both thought is needed out there.

There is a lot of things involved....

-Creation of story, what its about.
-Brainstorming, how to link plot arcs together.
-Writing - putting everything into words.
-Re-writes, this is where you try to make your story crystal clear in your delivery
-Proof reads, you will probably be your own editor so get ready to read, re-read, and re-read some more.
-Final editing and then publish.

I have written a few novels but haven't been published.

Currently working on creating everything I need to before I go "live" with my novels as well as securing an editor and a group of people for a complete read through and feedback.

That's a good start. Now read and write a lot. Like, a lot. I read over 100 books a year and write about 2,000 words per day.

Also all of this, and most likely, your first attempt isn't going to be anything amazing. It takes time to get the feel of how to write enough to fill a book without boring people. Mostly it's about structure.

you need to read a lot, honestly. if you are not well-read and you try writing something, it really shows.

dedication (out of things that haven't been mentioned yet)

i'm two years into working on my novel and not even close to being ready to try and get it published yet. it's a huge commitment and a lot goes into it.

Another thing, is being able to take criticism.

You cannot take it to heart and have to keep going no matter how bad someone slams your story.

I've read a few articles all at once lately about avoiding the three act structure.

Some were kind of dramatic, about how the three act structure will kill your writing, but one pretty good point is that a lot of the best stories really don't follow it at all. Food for thought. I'd give you the links but I didn't bother to record them myself.
