It seems like such an interesting career, so that probably answers my question, lol.

I did it as an extra job in the military for 4 years. Went to firefighting school, participated in all the drills etc. It was actually fun.

Probably the whole trick to it all is.

1) Be in shape.
2) Always be ready. (no matter what you're doing)
3) Pay attention to every detail.

You kinda have to be ready to step up at any time too. Sadly some people will be scared or slow and you will have to make quick decisions because of it.

That's my take.
I'm sure there is at least one expert around who will tell you a lot more.

All depends on the city. But it's a,very lengthy process. It took two years from the time I applied and took the civil service test, to the time I began the academy, and another 3 months to finish the academy.

I had to go through countless interviews, psychological tests, etc. And since i started, my doctor said i'vr breathed in a mess load of chemicals. I have absolutely no idea how people do this voluntarily without pay. Lots of respect for that.

Not exactly true. It helps, but there are plenty of big dudes with beer guts that I work with that can perform the job like a superhero, and plenty of gym-rats that are worthless. It's moreso about technique rather than being in excellent shape. I don't care if your Arnold Schwarzenegger, pulling 6 lengths of 2 and a half fully charged hose up multiple stairs and holding it while in use is going to wear you down something serious.

What's your day to day like? Are you satisfied with your career? Do you plan on doing it long-term?

Depends on the day. Some days I'm getting paid to read comic books and sleep all day, other days i getting paid to work my ass off from the second I walk in the door to the second I leave for the day, and other days it's a combination. You just never know until the day starts.

I'm very satisfied with it. Just be prepared for your city/town/whatever to not like you as much as the cops because cops bring in money for the city and you don't. You cost the city money. Therefore, they will always have priority in contract negotiations, more pay, etc. But with that said, I love my job and I also get a pension, which is a great thing. Yes, I plan on doing this until I retire. Just be aware that you WILL get injured. In two years time, I've cracked my kneecap, had ladders fall on top of me, fallen out of windows, fell out of the bed of the fire truck, etc. At the end of your career, your body will be messed up big time.

I was a paid volunteer EMT/Firefighter for about 2 years before I moved out of town.

Pretty much like mentioned above, technique and applying yourself to training and learning the ins and outs will help. We were always invited to summer/winter fire school, but I worked evenings at my actual job so I could never go. We'd send up 4-5 in one of the Fire SUVs then they'd give us a run down of the class when they returned to try and make our department a little more efficient.
