It's only like this if you're just starting out or if you haven't worked out in a long time. After a long period of inactivity and getting back into a workout routine, it's perfectly normal. You should feel less pain in a week or two. Try not to overdo it on the weights in these first couple of weeks, as not to risk a potential injury.

I usually stay sore longer if I skip workouts. Kind of weird how that works. If I'm sore on the day of a workout and I power through it the soreness is totally gone the next day.
