Are laptops okay in a carry on? Do they have to search them or anything? What about jewelry? I've got a few piercings and there is a necklace I'd rather not travel without. It's only an hour flight and we are only going overnight, so we don't need luggage if we can bring our clothes and laptop in our carry on.

Yes.

Only if you give them a reason to.

You can wear them, but they might set off the metal detectors when going through the security check.

put your devices into flight mode or remove the batteries during take off and during landing. its probably not going to interfere with the planes systems but the flight attendants probably wont like it anyway

Then what happens? Do they use a wand/pat you down? I've had that had a courthouse once.

I would try to avoid having tons of jewelry or stuff in your pockets when you go through security because you'll have to put it all in one of those bins that go through the x-ray thing. The more stuff you have to put in the bins, the more stressful that is. Especially because there's usually a line and you feel like you're holding a bunch of people up with every second you take.

Makes sense. No reason to chance it. It's like an hour-long domestic flight, so I can just take a book.

Yeah, but a couple of my earrings require jewelry pliers because they are designed stupidly, so I won't really be able to take them out easily.

Also, we were advised to be at the airport two hours before the flight. Is that a normal amount of time?

Sealtbelts are useless if you are crashing down from 30,000 above the sky with extraordinary speed covered in flames and fumes and all the desperiation.

It is there so they hopefully have an easier time finding the pieces of your body

Very normal. I missed my flight one time because I came to the airport 1 hour early and the TSA line was hold up. If anything, I always will go the safer route and go 3 hours early before flight. I mean that's where the line "flying is a bitch" comes from.

You want to get there plenty early before the flight. Because the time is when it's supposed to take off. 2 hours is good.

Bring gum or mentos or something for the flight. Helps prevent your mouth from drying out and your ears to deal with the air pressure during takeoff and especially landing.

That's more than enough time. Better safe than sorry though. The main thing that can hold you up once you get to the airport is a really long security line, but this seems to be much more likely to happen at very large airports like O'Hare and JFK than smaller airports. 3 hours beforehand is too early unless you're super fucking paranoid.

Also I think the main purpose of seatbelts is to keep you in your seat during high levels of turbulence.

Okay. Our flight is 6 in the morning so we will probably just go for 4. I probably will just stay awake the night before, since I don't sleep much anyway.

Thanks for the tips guys, I'm actually feeling a bit better about this.

6 AM, you're going to likely have plenty of downtime at the airport before you depart. Better safe than sorry though if you're fine with waiting longer.

Is it normally very invasive going through security? I'm your typical, "I really don't like people in my personal space" sort of guy. The whole thing gives me anxiety.

I dunno about the U.S on person, but their security seems excessive.

In here they just xray your stuff, have the officer scan you with thise batons, and tap your pockets.

When I got on a flight, no one physically touched me to see if I had anything in my pockets. You stand in a tiny room where you get scanned head to toe.

No, but you're going to get x-rayed.

I've personally never been patted down at an airport and I've flown through JFK, the one in Boston, Charlotte, Mobile, Dallas, Houston, and Atlanta.

Two hours is plenty of time. The main reason for showing up early is that you have to check your bags an hour before the flight leaves at most airports. I've never had an issue getting through security on time.

The closest I've come to missing a flight was in Atlanta... I had like a 15 minute layover and had to get to a gate really far away from the one I landed. But I made it.

Navigating the airport is probably the hardest part, but just follow the signs. It's easy.

no

put shoes, belt, metal in bins, laptop goes in a separate bin

stand in big scanner

put your arms up and wait until it scans your body and they tell you to go

i recommend some motion sickness medicine if you are prone to motion sickness

and listen to everything the flight attendants say so you don't get beaten and dragged off the plane

That's a relief. I can't remove all my jewelry, but I'm sure they can wand me for that.

LOL!

Also, looking through a list of objects my airport accepts for carry ons/checked bags and they felt the need to mention that exploding projectiles are neither allowed as carry on items or checked luggage.

just in case they tell you to take them off

you want this security process to go as smoothly as possible
