Board 8 > Any suggestions for a massive list of games I'm making?

As a side project, I am writing about the history of video games. Within each chapter I will have a "games of the era" section where I will list notable games and summarize them. I use the term "notable" quite loosely though as I plan to include over 1500 games.

Currently I am cataloging potential games to be included. My list is over 1900 games long though I'm sure I have forgotten some. Here is a list both alphabetically and chronologically (based on first release).

Things for me to work on.

- Early video gaming (not the "science projects" games, I'm talking about games which were available outside of one place)
- Games from lesser known platforms (though not complete failures)
- Sport titles (I probably have most/all of the franchises it's more to decide which ones should be included)
- Mobile games


If you have any suggestions for games it would be appreciated.

this sounds like way too much work.

what about listing by primary genres? if you're concerned with notability, especially if you're taking that term lightly, how a title affected or contributed to the genre might be easier to start with.

i would specify or pick a single expansion that became the definitive version in some cases but whatever. i mean the criteria seems fairly loose so i'm not sure the approach to go with this.

not sure why KOF 14 would be listed. 98 and 2002 over it for sure along with 13.

I notice Final Fantasy 2, 11, and 14 are absent. 2 is probably borderline but could be seen as the predecessor to SaGa (including The Final Fantasy Legend series). 11 is notable as the first successful console MMO. 14 is perhaps notable for the way its reception was complete garbage at first, and the game was so thoroughly reworked that it's become one of the best-received MMOs of the last decade. Honestly I question FF3's worthiness for a list like this more than any of those. All the rest of the series I can find good reasons for including, but 3 didn't really do or inspire anything that Dragon Quest 3 hadn't already.

Thank you for the suggestions. I do realize the size of the project. It will probably take years before I have a decent first draft.

I'm still in a game collecting phase and I have yet to filter out many games outside of clearly bad games which are un-notable. As for "why do I have this games instead of this game" it's because it hasn't been suggested.

Maybe you should contact a publisher about this project and see what they say. It would probably be better to do that now than after the fact if your intention is to get it published somewhere.

And as much hate as it gets, Final Fantasy II is probably the most influential on the series along the original with Chocobos, Ultima, Leviathan, Mysidia, Rebels Vs. Empire, plot focused, Dragoons, etc.

Yeah they're different. Orthanc is pretty important too. I'm not sure whether it or Moria did the multiplayer thing first. Not sur eif Moria has a party system, but Orthanc definitely has, and not only that it had classes, and pretty varied at that.

So if it's the first RPG with MP, party and character classes I'd say that's pretty important.
