A lot of the reasons it was so well-received aren't going to be as appealing today, since a lot of them were the genre-defining things it did (like nobody thinks twice about Citizen Kane's camera work because it all shows up in every modern movie), but it is still an overall well-crafted, solid game.

Ask anyone that played it when it came out what it was like the first time they stepped out into Hyrule field.

Also the soundtrack is phenomenal and a patient person can make badass music with the ocarina. I also wanna add that my phone auto corrected ocarina to ovarian. Lol

Like it was stated before, the game has aged by now so playing it now most likely would not give you a jaw dropping experience. That being said, I first played it when it released on the Wii's virtual console and I enjoyed the music, the story, the later temples, and the items. Overall it was an enjoyable experience.

It was the game that everyone had been waiting for..for years....and unlike a a lot of other hyped games, this one actually delivered.

For it's time, it was beyond anything else out there. The scope, and epicness was something that really defined a genre and redefined a franchise..

All around, it was just a great game.

You know how people gush over how you step out of the cave in Breath of the Wild and the world looks completely massive? That was basically the feeling people got in OOT 20 years ago. Before that, 3D games (and levels) were usually pretty small. Just look at Mario 64. When it came out, nothing was as big or had as many secrets as OOT (at least in the 3D space).

Nowadays I think the gushing is just nostalgia though, since I never really saw the appeal in the game, even at the time. Technically it was impressive, but the gameplay and story not so much.

This pretty much sums it up. When it first came out it was beyond my expectations. That rarely happens with me anymore.
