I am a disabled person and work at a place that helps find employment for the disabled. They can be the hardest working people I know as they're already used to life not being easy or fair and bring that "I have to work a little harder" attitude to the job.

volunteering for shit jobs at work will not help you get ahead, and in many cases it will cause you to be passed over for things like promotions because people rise to the level of their own incompetence, and there's nothing more incompetent than a worker who does the worst jobs to try to get ahead. getting there early and staying late could get you in trouble in some places -- unless you're not getting overtime, in which case you're also being stupid.

I agree with this in that to advance in work, you need to work smarter. Find ways to save the company money by streamlining processes or finding a new market or demand for the customers. You should always be focusing on the end product for the customer if you want to advance in a company. When companies see you working smarter, not harder, is when they want to promote you. If you do such a great job on a menial task, management will want to keep you there because they would have to replace you. The goal is not to be irreplaceable; the goal is the create the best god damn customer experience.

At the company i'm with now theres a dude who's been there like 25 years but is quiet and never talks and hasnt moved up. I talked to him about it and its not even that he doesnt want it no one knows he exists.

His whole list is "how to be a slave to the corporate workplace" essentially.

Working hard when you have tangible rewards that scale to the amount of work you put in? Sure. Working hard to squeeze water out of a stone, though, is incredibly inefficient, and most employers don't want somebody who needs to work twice as hard as somebody else to achieve the exact same results, unless that somebody else is just a flatout horrible employee.

Businesses truly value people who work smarter, not harder, because they know how to get more/better results with less effort and resources (of which "time" is included). Hard work is definitely not a bad thing, but it's not the end-all, be-all that many people think it is.

Taking a minimum wage job and working "super super hard" in a position with no potential for growth or advancement with minimal pay is exactly how we end up with people working multiple jobs while still living barely over the poverty line, if even that.

The only point I agree with is that, yes, if your job sucks, go somewhere else.

Also this lmao. When I first started working at my current job, I made it a thing to punch in a good 15 minutes, sometimes even a half an hour before my shift was supposed to start and I was chewed out for it.

A lot of places don't actually care if you "show up early" and "leave late", in fact, they might hate it because then that means they have to pay you overtime.

Not sure where you're getting this from, but it has nothing to do with Mike's list. All else being equal, the person who works hard will always be more successful and likely happier than the person who doesn't.

If it takes you 20 minutes to do a task that I can do in 5 minutes, then generally speaking, I'm the more desirable worker for that particular task. Doesn't matter if you had to work your ass off to do it, since it still means that you working your absolute hardest still didn't match my level of efficiency.

It's why you generally get people that are actually good at what they do.

I explained why "working hard" is not as valuable as "working smart", which is why telling people to work hard at their terrible job is generally terrible advice, since not only will you not be recognized for it, but it's also a colossal waste of effort and time.

Anyway, it looks like a list that includes typical work ethic precepts. Some better than others, some more reasonable than others, but none of which I would call particularly bad or demeaning. At worst, some are misguided or naive in their incompleteness.

One thing to keep in mind about your China and Mexico examples is that many laborers and professionals from those kinds of countries moved to the US to pursue better jobs. They've also moved to Canada, Germany, Australia and so on, basically to any nation where jobs could be found. Perhaps some people in the US are not comfortable with the nontraditional idea of going wherever they are needed outside the US to do whatever it takes to make money.

Well, the nation fundamentally can't prosper with 10% owning over 50% of the total wealth. I mean, it's just simple logic.

Trickle down economics was a failure and our economy and nation are suffering because of it. It doesn't take a genius to see this. There'd be plenty more jobs if wealth was distributed in a way that didn't look like a Dirac-Delta function.

This works well for those in the trades which the pledge is somewhat tailored towards. People who do the bare minimum are the first to be let go.

It all depends on management. Good management WILL reward hard work, but good management is few and far between these days. In too many cases management are the bare minimum guys and in environments like that then yeah, you're probably making yourself a doormat.
