With Final Fantasy XV well into its DLC stage, and Dragon Quest XI getting closer and closer to its Japanese release, something else might be moving at Square Enix.

On the Japanese recruitment site ECareerFA, an ad was posted by an anonymous company searching for a 2D Artist for a “Super-Famous RPG Series.”

Later in the ad, it’s mentioned that the artist will be tasked with creating the image of “a certain RPG’s numbered title.” He will work on the concepts of towns, fields, dungeons, background props like furniture and emblems, vehicles, weapons, items and map icons.

We also read that the candidate must be able to design with focus on the importance of the world view. From the description, it appears to be a game in the concept, pre-production or very early production phase, which is when a large amount of concept art is created.

While the company’s name is not specified, the hints are rather solid: it’s described as having created “huge RPGs” and having launched online games as well. It has a digital entertainment business that provides “high quality games with unique world views” and delivered “a large number of million-sellers.” On top of that, the company has an amusement business based focused on the Taito Station arcades (Taito is owned by Square Enix), a publishing business for manga, and a licensing business, exactly like Square Enix.

Quite telling is also the description of the location of the company’s headquarters. It’s in Tokyo, one minute from the Higashi-Shinjuku station of the Oedo Line and Fukutoshin line, eight minutes from the main Shinjuku Station, and eight minutes from the Shunjuku Sanchome station of the Marunouchi and Fukutoshin line.

Care to take a guess which major publisher has its headquarters fitting that location?

Seriously though, "super famous" makes me think FF or DQ, but personally I'd rather it somehow be CT or TWEWY or maybe some other stuff that I don't think would fit "super famous"

FF, KH, and DQ are either in development for, or not a big deal to have a new numbered Sequel.

Odds are, it's FF16. And even if it weren't, the odds are perpetually stacked against Chrono.

FF4, 5, 7, 10, 12, and 13 have had sequels already.
FF1, 2 and 3 are old enough that I don't think Square wants to do anything with them.
So that really only leaves 6, 8, and 9. 8 isn't universally loved and 9 is a bit weird, so 6 might actually be the most viable.

I think it's like 2 million above VIII first run.


With X being remastered twice now... it's probably passed VIII, and made some headway on VII

I think he means in the sense that magic is dead

.... but a writer can easily get around that, if anything that's just a good excuse for party members to start from level 1 again

pretty much, yeah.
it's a new world without magic. the party's gotten older and have lived in a world without magic that they've steadily rebuilt. give it some 20 years or so and Edgar's got himself a swanky golden mustache, you've got yourself a younger cast plus some old returners.

why would people stop trying to find ways to get magic back? it was powerful and sealing magic away just says that the first empire that finds a way to get to the Esper World will immediately become the global superpower. the story isn't really over, all that's been settled is that FF6 world and the Esper World have had their connections severed. Esper World can still exist just fine, locked in a distant plane, knowing that humans will eventually find a way to invade it so they can harness the power inside.

easy way to demonstrate that such a thing's happened: start the game with Terra as human and have, in a dramatic moment, her turn into her Esper form. since it's been so long and magic has literally been removed, she needs to re-learn how to use magic again.

I think it's a CD drama or anime.
But yes, V does have a sequel.

The only games that don't have some
Type of after close or side thing are III (but it has a remake) VI, VIII, and IX.

VI and VIII Magic was either eliminated forever or put in a impossible to escape loop that doesn't have t at that time, so it really wouldn't make any sense to have sequels there.

At the end of the game, you destroy the statues which are the source of all magic. Magic isn't sealed away, it's gone. The Esper World isn't cut off from the normal world. I don't think they really said what happened to the Esper World, but last we saw, Espers broke the seal and came into the normal world. All the Espers are gone as well. Their existance relied on the magic statues. That was why it was a big deal regarding what would happen to the half-Esper Terra.

I mean, for a sequel they can just make up a reason why magic is back. But from what we know about the original game, magic should be gone.

though that does get back to your finale of yes, it's making up a reason for why magic's back. it's just important to note that magic technically still exists in that universe, just sealed in another dimension or whatever.

Didn't ALL the Espers die? Wasn't that a huge plot point, and why Terra thought she too would fade now, and they make it out as if it were her humanity that saved her..

Square not working on FFXVI right now would be pretty surprising I think. Though of course, it could be the second or third part of the FFVII remake...

I remember renting the FFV anime as a kid. That was years before I played the game (well, to be fair it hadn't been released over here yet anyway) so it made absolutely no sense.
